What to know
- Subnautica 2 does not support split-screen or couch co-op
- The game supports up to 4-player online multiplayer
- Cross-play works between PC and Xbox players
- Every player needs their own system and game copy
Subnautica 2 introduces online multiplayer for the first time in the franchise, allowing up to four players to explore its alien underwater world together. However, if you were hoping to play locally with a friend on the same screen, there is some disappointing news.
Subnautica 2 does not currently support split-screen multiplayer, local co-op, or couch co-op on any platform. The game is designed around online cooperative play only.

That means if you want to play with another person, each player will need:
- Their own PC or Xbox console
- Their own copy of the game or Game Pass access
- An internet connection
The game currently supports:
| Feature | Availability |
|---|---|
| Online Co-op | Yes |
| Split Screen | No |
| Couch Co-op | No |
| LAN Play | No |
| Cross-Play | Yes |
| Solo Play | Yes |
The developers at Unknown Worlds Entertainment have confirmed that Subnautica 2 is built around optional online co-op, while still remaining fully playable solo. The multiplayer system allows players to:
- Host worlds online
- Invite friends through the platform or in-game friends lists
- Convert single-player saves into multiplayer sessions
- Play with up to four players together
Cross-play between PC and Xbox is also supported at launch, making it easier to join friends regardless of platform.
Although split-screen is unavailable, many players in the community have requested local co-op support since the game’s announcement. Feedback forums and Steam discussions continue to show strong demand for couch co-op functionality.

At the moment, however, the developers have not announced any plans to add split-screen support during Early Access. The current roadmap focuses on online co-op improvements, quality-of-life changes, player revival systems, emotes, and voice chat features instead.
Subnautica 2 launched into Early Access on PC and Xbox Series X|S on May 14, 2026. The game remains in active development, so features may continue evolving throughout the Early Access period.
