Huawei P9 Lite first came to light in April 2016 as the entry-level variant of the high-end P9 and P9 Plus, but it got an upgraded variant with the same name, Huawei P9 Lite, in early 2017. The OG device came pre-installed with Android Marshmallow out of the box and has since been upgraded to Android 7.0 Nougat, but the 2017 model has Nougat out of the box. The question that lingers in many people’s heads is if and when the Huawei P9 Lite duo will receive Android 8.0 Oreo update. Well, you’ve come to the right place!

Huawei P9 Lite Oreo update

Category Current OS Android 8.0 Expected release date
P9 Lite (2016) Android 7.0 Not eligible NA
P9 Lite (2017) Android 7.0 Eligible Q3 2018, beta available (in China)

Of the two Huawei P9 Lite handsets, only the 2017 model will be updated to Android 8.0 Oreo. FYI, this is the same device that goes by the name Huawei P8 Lite 2017, Huawei Honor 8 Lite, Huawei GR3 2018 or in other markets, Huawei Nova Lite.

Huawei has already promised to roll out the Oreo-based EMUI 8.0 to the P9 Lite 2017 model in Q3 2018, but the exact date remains unknown. Still, those interested can join the beta program with the help of instructions from this page.

Android P update: Not eligible

With Android P upon us, many are wondering whether their device will also receive this update. Well, sorry to tell you this but after Oreo, the P9 Lite 2017 won’t receive another major OS upgrade, but you can still expect to receive security patches once in a while. If you still own the 2016 P9 Lite, don’t even think about P because you won’t even get Oreo.
