How to get Huawei P20 Pro Camera app on its Treble and AOSP ROMs

When Google finally declared Project Treble as the savior of Android OS from the grave issue of software fragmentation, it breathed new life into custom ROM development. An entirely new generation of custom ROMs based on Project Treble’s A/B style partitioning called Treble ROMs are taking over the Android development community, and we’re just getting started with it.

But with all of the freedom that custom ROMs such as Treble and AOSP ROMs bring with them, there are certain elements you miss out on. For instance, when replacing the stock firmware with a custom ROM, you lose the default Camera app which is designed specifically for your device and instead end up using a generic Camera app. Well, thanks to auras76 over at XDA, Huawei P20 Pro users can now not only enjoy the freedom of a custom ROM, but still get to keep the magnificent Camera app that the stock ROM comes with.

  1. Download and save the Huawei P20 Pro Camera App for Treble ROMs ZIP file on the internal storage of your phone.
  2. Considering that you’re flashing the Camera app on a Treble ROM device, you must have TWRP custom recovery already installed
  3. Shut down the device, press and hold the Power + Volume Down button until the screen boots up, at which point you can let go of the Power button but keep holding the Volume Down button until the TWRP recovery screen shows up.
  4. Tap on the Install button and navigate to the directory where you had earlier stored the Huawei P20 Pro Camera App for treble roms.zip
  5. Once you’ve selected the file, Swipe to Confirm Flash and then tap on Reboot to head back to the system.

Does Project Treble support mean I will get updates directly from Google? Hell, no!

Note: The Huawei P20 Pro Camera app port is designed for Treble ROM users of the Huawei P20 Pro device. Trying it out with a non-supported device could software brick the device and cause a complete software reset, so proceed with caution.

Users of LineageOS and other custom Treble ROMs have confirmed that the Camera port is working on their Huawei P20 Pro devices. While there only a few instances of it, if you do face issues while using the stock Camera app, make sure you have the Huawei Gallery app installed along with it so you can easily preview images from the Camera app itself.

Is it finally time for you to switch to a Project Treble ROM, or will you keep holding on to the stock ROM for now?
