Although it is slightly behind Microsoft and Amazon, Google has been pushing it hard recently to get a lead in machine learning space. It seems like the company has finally gotten a hold on to something. The search engine giant, at its Cloud Next conference in San Francisco, had unveiled the new Cloud Video Intelligence API.

The new Video Intelligence API makes use of machine learning to automatically identify the intent of the video and different entities in the video thereby making the videos searchable. Also, once the video parsing is done, users can search for videos that contain specific things.

So far, this has been possible only with still images where developers could use different image recognition API’s to search for information in the images. But, with Google’s Cloud Video Intelligence API, developers can now search for information from videos as well.

Google, in a web post, said “The API is the first of its kind enabling developers to easily search and discover video content by providing information about entities (nouns such as “dog” “flower” or “human” or verbs such as “run” “swim” or “fly”) inside video content. It can even provide a contextual understanding of when those entities appear; for example, searching for “Tiger” would find all precise shots containing tigers across a video collection in Google Cloud Storage.”

Currently, the Google Cloud Video Intelligence API is in private beta. In case you are interested, you can sign up for it here.
