What to know

  • Google revealed in court that Gemini AI reached 350 million monthly users as of March 2025.
  • This marks a sharp increase from 9 million daily users in October 2024.
  • Gemini's user base still lags behind ChatGPT, which has about 600 million monthly users.
  • The disclosure came during an antitrust hearing focused on Google's role in the AI market.

Google has disclosed in a recent court hearing that its Gemini AI chatbot now serves 350 million monthly active users worldwide. This figure, current as of March 2025, highlights the rapid adoption of Gemini over the past six months. In October 2024, Gemini had only 9 million daily users, but by last month, the platform reported 35 million daily users and a total of 350 million monthly users, according to internal company data presented in court proceedings.

Despite this growth, Gemini remains behind its main competitor, ChatGPT, which Google estimates had around 600 million monthly users and 160 million daily users in March 2025. Meta AI is also a major player, with nearly 500 million monthly users as of September 2024. The figures were revealed as part of an ongoing antitrust case in Washington, D.C., where the U.S. Department of Justice is examining whether Google’s dominance in online search could extend unfairly into the AI sector.

During the hearing, Sissie Hsiao, the executive leading the Gemini team, testified that ChatGPT has started to divert some search traffic from Google, particularly for academic and technical queries. These types of searches are less lucrative for Google’s advertising business. However, Google has not yet observed a significant impact on commercial search queries, which are more valuable for ad revenue. Vidhya Srinivasan, Google’s head of ads, warned internally that AI tools could soon begin to affect commercial searches as well, prompting discussions about integrating ads into Gemini more quickly.

The Department of Justice argues that Google’s existing power in search could allow it to dominate the emerging AI market unless new regulations or structural changes are implemented. The court proceedings continue to scrutinize how Google’s strategies in AI may influence competition and consumer choice in the future.
