Google Pixel in India will soon get WiFi calling on Jio

Although VoLTE calling was already available on the Google Pixel and Pixel XL since December last year, a new software update will soon enable WiFi calling as well. This is for those who’re using a Reliance Jio SIM on their Pixel or Pixel XL.

Google announced the same via a Twitter post recently. The WiFi calling feature for Jio on the Pixel smartphones will be enabled via a new Nougat software update. An exact release date wasn’t mentioned, but you can expect the update to arrive very soon.

With WiFi calling support, Jio users can make calls over WiFi when the network reception is bad. The calls would be placed using the Jio number. Since VoLTE requires a strong network and data, having a bad reception wouldn’t allow users to place calls. And that’s where WiFi calling gets useful.

The update that’s supposed to be rolling out to Pixel and Pixel XL users in India is most likely Android 7.1.2 Nougat. Be on the lookout for a new update, as it could come anytime.
