What to know
- Google Maps is adding spoken rerouting confirmations for including or avoiding HOV lanes.
- The existing voice-routing feature already covers ferries, highways, and tolls, so HOV support expands the preferences you can change while navigating.
- We found the new strings in code from the unreleased Google Maps v26.43.00.1002020710 build, but could not surface the controls in the app yet.
Google Maps already has a broader voice-controlled routing feature that can update navigation preferences for ferries, highways, and tolls. The feature itself has appeared in the app’s code since June 18, 2026, or earlier.
Now, our teardown of Google Maps v26.43.00.1002020710 shows that the same system is being extended to HOV lanes. The new confirmations let navigation acknowledge spoken requests to either include or avoid HOV routes.
Spoken route changes now cover HOV lanes
The newly added responses are concise confirmations that Google Maps can give after changing an HOV preference. One tells the driver that navigation is rerouting to include HOV lanes, while the other confirms that it is rerouting to avoid them.
The new strings, seen below, point to both sides of the preference:
These are rerouting confirmations rather than general descriptions or settings labels. Their wording directly connects a spoken preference change with a recalculated route, allowing the app to acknowledge the request without requiring the driver to check the screen.
This extends an existing Google Maps feature
HOV support is an update to the existing spoken rerouting controls, not an entirely new feature. Earlier Google Maps builds already contained matching responses for allowing ferries, highways, and tolls:
The shared naming and sentence structure place the two HOV responses within that established system. The broader voice-routing capability is already public; what changes in this build is the addition of HOV lanes as another preference navigation can explicitly include or avoid.
The HOV controls are not available to users yet. We’ll watch future Google Maps builds for their rollout.
