What to know

  • Google Home has introduced Gemini-powered AI Camera Search that enables Nest cameras to understand and describe activities in recorded footage.
  • Users can now search camera history using natural language questions like “Did the dog go outside today?” or “Was a delivery truck here today?”
  • The feature is currently rolling out to select Nest Aware Plus subscribers in the US who are part of the Google Home Public Preview program.

Google has launched an exciting new feature that brings artificial intelligence to your home security by integrating its Gemini AI into Google Home, starting with AI Camera Search that transforms how your Nest cameras understand and describe activities.

As Google revealed, the Nest cameras will now provide detailed AI descriptions instead of basic “motion detected” alerts. For instance, if your pet is up to some mischief, the camera might tell you “the dog is digging in the garden” or “person leaving a parcel on the porch” when a delivery arrives.

The new search capability lets you interact with your camera history more naturally. You can ask questions like “Did the kids play in the backyard this afternoon?” or “Was the rubbish taken to the street yesterday?” and get relevant video clips as answers.

Along with AI Camera Search, Google is introducing “Help Me Create,” a feature that simplifies home automation. You can describe what you want in plain language, and Google will set up the automation for you. This includes security measures like remembering to lock up at night, health routines like setting up morning workouts, and daily reminders like taking out the trash, cleaning the house, etc.
