What to know
- Google Contacts is preparing a confirmation dialog that identifies contact details that cannot be moved to another account.
- The warning separates a single unsupported detail from a list of multiple details, helping you see what will be left behind.
- We found the dormant code in an unreleased Google Contacts v4.89.27.989965096 build and could not surface the dialog in the app yet.
Google already publicly documents the ability to move a contact from one Google Account to another, including that the original contact is deleted after the move. Google Contacts is now developing a more specific warning for information that cannot make that trip.
A teardown of Google Contacts v4.89.27.989965096 reveals a new confirmation dialog that can identify either one contact detail or several details that will not be transferred to the destination account.
Google Contacts will identify details that cannot be moved
The new dialog is titled “Move contact?” and warns that some information will not be moved to the other account. Google Contacts has separate messages for a single affected item and for multiple affected details.
For one item, the dialog can insert the name of the unsupported information into the warning through the %1$s placeholder. When several details are affected, the app instead introduces a list with the message, “These details won’t be moved to your other account.”
The new strings, seen below, point to the confirmation Google Contacts is preparing:
The warning adds detail to an existing feature
The ability to move contacts between Google Accounts is not new. Google’s existing support documentation already explains how the move works and warns that the contact is deleted from the original account.
What is new in this build is the more precise, in-app disclosure before that move proceeds. Instead of presenting only a general confirmation, Google Contacts can tell you that particular information will not transfer. The singular and plural variants also show that the dialog is designed to adapt its wording to the amount of affected information.
The strings do not identify which kinds of contact information may be excluded, so the evidence does not support naming any specific fields. They establish only that Google Contacts is developing a warning capable of identifying details that cannot be moved.
This warning is not available to users yet, and we’ll watch future Google Contacts builds for signs of its rollout.
