What to know
- Google is preparing Song Search to save an attempted search locally when your phone is offline.
- The broader ability to continue song searches in the background is already public, but saving an offline search on-device for later is new.
- We found the dormant string in code from the unreleased Google app v17.65.17.sa.arm64, but could not surface the feature in the app.
Google’s Song Search tool is designed to help identify music playing around you. Its broader background-search capability is already public, allowing a search to continue beyond the initial listening screen.
Now, a teardown of Google app v17.65.17.sa.arm64 shows Google is preparing a separate fallback for times when your phone is offline. The new code says an attempted song search will be saved directly on the device for later.
Song Search gets an offline save state
We found a new Song Search resource while examining the Google app build. The message is specifically written for an offline state and tells the user that the search will be stored on the device for later.
The new string, seen below, points to the offline handoff:
The wording makes two parts of the behavior clear. First, losing connectivity will not simply end the attempted search. Second, the pending search will be saved locally, giving Song Search something it can return to later.
That is the new detail in this build. The broader background-search capability has already been covered publicly, but that earlier coverage did not describe offline attempts being preserved on the phone. This string introduces a distinct offline state rather than merely referring to a search that keeps running in the background.
The code does not explain precisely when the saved search will resume or what controls, prompts, or notifications may accompany it. We could not surface the offline-save behavior in the app, so the evidence here is limited to the newly added resource.
This offline Song Search option is not available to users yet, and we’ll watch future Google app builds for signs of its rollout.
