What to know

  • The Google app’s existing Gemini screen-shopping feature is gaining a single “Shop this” action.
  • It can identify the product on your screen, find sellers, compare its key sizes or variants, and suggest similar styles.
  • We found the supporting code in the unreleased Google app v17.66.11.sa.arm64 build; it does not establish when the update will become available.

Gemini’s broader shopping capabilities are already public, and the Google app has contained code for its screen-shopping feature since August 21, 2026. Existing actions can explore similar products, find deals, summarize pros and cons, and check warranties and return policies.

Now, our teardown of Google app v17.66.11.sa.arm64 reveals an update that pulls several of those shopping tasks into one screen-context action named “Shop this.” We found the addition in the app’s code and have not surfaced it in the app yet.

About APK teardowns — An APK teardown works by reading the not-yet-shipped code inside a beta build, which lets us preview features a developer is working on before they’re announced. But work-in-progress code can change, stay hidden behind a server-side flag, or be scrapped before it ever reaches your phone.

“Shop this” combines product identification, seller search, and comparisons

The update adds one consolidated prompt for shopping from whatever product is visible on the screen. Instead of asking Gemini separate questions, you will be able to start with “Shop this” and have it handle several parts of the buying research at once.

The prompt first asks Gemini to identify the product and find places where it can be purchased. It then requests a quick explanation of what the item is designed for, followed by a practical comparison of its important sizes or variants. Finally, it asks for similar products in slightly different styles, giving you alternatives without requiring another prompt.

The new strings, seen below, point to that combined workflow:

assistant_floaty_screen_context_shopping_shop_this_title = "Shop this"
assistant_floaty_screen_context_shopping_shop_this_query = ""Identify this product and where to buy it. Give me a quick summary of what it’s built for, a practical comparison of its key sizes or variants, and show similar products in slightly different styles to help me explore my options""

This is an extension of the screen-shopping code already present in the Google app, rather than the beginning of an entirely new feature. Its older actions divide shopping research into narrower jobs, including looking for comparable products, checking current promotions, weighing reviews and drawbacks, and examining store policies. “Shop this” brings identification, seller discovery, variant comparison, and style exploration together under a single action.

The code does not reveal a rollout date or other availability details. The updated “Shop this” action is not available to users yet, and we’ll watch future Google app builds for its rollout.
