What to know

  • Google is building a way to rename saved AI Mode search conversations.
  • AI Mode already offers thread deletion and public-link controls, while renaming adds another way to manage saved searches.
  • We found the new controls and feedback messages in code from the unreleased Google app v17.70.10.sa.arm64, but could not surface the feature in the app.

Google’s AI Mode already gives users some control over their saved search conversations, including thread deletion and public-link management. Renaming those searches, however, has not been part of the publicly covered feature set.

Now, a teardown of the latest Google app beta reveals that Google is preparing a dedicated rename workflow for AI Mode searches. The code includes a Rename action, a dialog titled “Rename search,” and a Save button, along with separate messages for successful and failed attempts.

About APK teardowns — An APK teardown works by reading the not-yet-shipped code inside a beta build, which lets us preview features a developer is working on before they’re announced. But work-in-progress code can change, stay hidden behind a server-side flag, or be scrapped before it ever reaches your phone.

AI Mode is adding a Rename search dialog

The new strings outline a straightforward editing flow for saved AI Mode conversations. A Rename action leads to a dialog labeled “Rename search,” where the updated name can be applied using a Save button.

Code in Google app v17.70.10.sa.arm64 references the following interface text:

googleapp_aim_threads_rename_text = "Rename"
googleapp_aim_threads_rename_dialog_title = "Rename search"
googleapp_aim_threads_rename_dialog_confirm_text = "Save"

This is more specific than a generic editing reference: the identifiers tie the controls directly to AI Mode threads, while the visible text describes the complete rename prompt. For users who keep multiple AI Mode searches, custom names should make particular conversations easier to recognize when returning to them.

The broader ability to manage AI Mode threads is already public. What is new in this build is the dedicated Rename search dialog and its accompanying interface states.

The interface includes success and failure feedback

Google is also preparing clear feedback for both possible outcomes. A successful change produces a “Search renamed” message, while an unsuccessful attempt tells the user that the search cannot be renamed and asks them to try again later.

The new strings, seen below, point to those two states:

googleapp_aim_thread_renamed_toast = "Search renamed"
googleapp_aim_thread_rename_failed_toast = "Can’t rename. Try again later."

These messages show that the rename workflow is being built with confirmation and failure handling rather than only a text-editing control. That should leave users with an immediate, unambiguous result after they press Save.

The AI Mode rename option is not available to users yet, and we’ll watch future Google app builds for its rollout.
