What to know
- Gmail is adding an “Accomplish this Task” command with supporting reference links to its existing AI Inbox task workflow.
- AI Inbox already surfaces and manages suggested to-dos; the new command extends that experience toward fulfilling a selected task.
- The evidence comes from code in the unreleased Gmail v2026.09.14.986636867.Release build and does not establish user availability.
Google has already announced Gmail’s broader AI Inbox experience, including its ability to surface suggested to-dos and help users manage them. The underlying agentic fulfillment workflow has also appeared in Gmail’s code since August 5, 2026, with actions such as “Start,” “Help me start,” “Suggest reply,” “Draft Reply,” and “Review.”
Now, a teardown of Gmail v2026.09.14.986636867.Release reveals a more direct task command. We diffed this build against the earlier version and found an “Accomplish this Task” prompt accompanied by a separate string for URL references.
Gmail adds a direct task-fulfillment command
The most important addition is the exact command “Accomplish this Task.” Its agentic-fulfillment prefix ties it to Gmail’s existing AI Inbox task workflow rather than introducing a separate feature.
This is a meaningful extension of the actions already present in the code. Earlier strings focused on starting a task, getting help with it, suggesting or drafting a reply, and reviewing the result. The new wording gives that workflow a clearer fulfillment instruction: the user can ask Gmail to accomplish the task itself.
The new string, seen below, names the command directly:
The task prompt includes supporting references
Gmail also adds a companion references field for this prompt. The string preserves a {URLS} placeholder, showing that the interface can associate one or more supporting links with the task-fulfillment command.
That detail is the part not covered by Google’s public description of AI Inbox. The broader capability is already public, but this build extends the existing to-do experience with a specific fulfillment prompt and a place for its reference URLs.
Code in Gmail v2026.09.14.986636867.Release references the new field as follows:
The “Accomplish this Task” addition is not available to users yet, and we’ll watch future Gmail builds for signs of its rollout.
