What to know
- Gemini is preparing to keep working on a task after your car connection ends.
- A phone notification will prompt you to review and finish the task in Gemini.
- The evidence comes from code in the unreleased Google app v17.66.11.sa.arm64 build.
Gemini Task mode and Gemini’s expansion into cars are already public. The latest Google app code points to a more specific capability: a task started in the car can persist after you leave or disconnect, instead of ending with the driving session.
We decompiled Google app v17.66.11.sa.arm64 and found new notification strings that connect those two surfaces. Gemini can continue working in the background, then direct you to the phone app when the task is ready for review and completion.
Gemini can carry a task beyond the car
The clearest new string says that “Gemini is still working on your task” after the car connection has been disconnected. That wording shows the task is designed to continue across the transition from the car to the phone, rather than requiring you to start over once the connection ends.
This could make longer Gemini tasks more practical while driving. You could hand something off in the car, leave the vehicle, and let Gemini continue processing it without keeping the automotive session open.
The new strings, seen below, point directly to that handoff:
A phone notification brings you back to the task
The accompanying notification text explains what happens next. Gemini asks you to open the app to “review and finish,” with a dedicated “Open Gemini” action button. Together, the strings describe a continuation flow rather than a simple reminder about an abandoned conversation.
The distinction matters because the broader Gemini Task mode and Gemini-in-cars capabilities are already public. What is new here is the connective tissue between them: the task remains in progress after the car disconnects, and Gemini uses a phone notification to return you to the work that began in the vehicle.
The wording also keeps the user in control of the final step. Gemini can continue working independently, but the notification directs you to review and finish the task inside Gemini rather than suggesting that every action completes automatically.
This cross-surface task continuation is not available to users yet. We’ll watch future Google app builds for signs of its rollout.
