What to know

  • Gemini’s existing media template gallery is adding a “Start from scratch” card.
  • The card prompts you to describe an image, song, or video instead of choosing a prepared template.
  • We found the code in the unreleased Google app v17.65.17.sa.arm64, but could not surface the card in the app.

Gemini already has code for a media template gallery designed to give you a quicker way into content generation. The broader capability, including video templates for quick-start generation, is already public.

Now, a teardown of Google app v17.65.17.sa.arm64 shows how that existing gallery is expanding. This build adds a general starting point for people who would rather write their own prompt than begin with a prepared template.

About APK teardowns — An APK teardown works by reading the not-yet-shipped code inside a beta build, which lets us preview features a developer is working on before they’re announced. But work-in-progress code can change, stay hidden behind a server-side flag, or be scrapped before it ever reaches your phone.

The key addition is an empty gallery card titled “Start from scratch.” Instead of steering you toward a predefined template, the card provides a media-specific instruction for the prompt bar.

For image generation, it tells you to describe an image. The corresponding music and video versions ask you to describe a song or video. Together, these strings point to one reusable card that changes its guidance according to the type of media you want to create.

The new strings, seen below, show the title and all three instructions:

assistant_robin_template_gallery_empty_card_title = “Start from scratch”
assistant_robin_template_gallery_empty_card_subtitle_image = “Describe an image in the prompt bar”
assistant_robin_template_gallery_empty_card_subtitle_music = “Describe a song in the prompt bar”
assistant_robin_template_gallery_empty_card_subtitle_video = “Describe a video in the prompt bar”

This gives the existing gallery a straightforward escape hatch: you can begin with your own idea rather than adapt one of its quick-start options. The strings do not indicate additional controls, generation settings, or separate workflows beyond entering the description in the prompt bar.

This extends an existing Gemini template feature

This is an update to a feature already present in the Google app’s code, not the beginning of a new project. We first saw the template feature on October 2, 2026, in Google app v17.63.17.ve.arm. That earlier build included labels for “Template Debug Options,” along with a Back control.

assistant_robin_template_debug_options_back_btn = “Back”
assistant_robin_template_debug_options_button = “Template Debug Options”
assistant_robin_template_debug_options_title = “Template Debug Options”

The newer v17.65.17.sa.arm64 build adds the part that matters to users: a gallery card for starting image, music, or video generation directly from a written prompt. We could not surface the card in the app, and the strings do not provide further availability details.

The start-from-scratch card is not available to users yet. We’ll watch future Google app builds for signs of its rollout.
