Close to a month ago, the Wi-Fi Alliance cleared the Galaxy Tab A 2017 with Android Oreo, implying that the rollout was to commence soon. Well, it appears the rollout has just started somewhere in Australia, but unlike the listing on WFA that had Oreo 8.0, the version rolling out is Oreo 8.1.
The update has been spotted with software version T380DXU2BRI6 and besides installing Oreo 8.1, you’ll also receive the latest Android security patch for the month of September 2018. Being an OTA update, it will definitely take some time before it hits all units of the Galaxy Tab A 2017.

Also, it appears that the rollout will take place region-wise and probably depending on the variants of the slate, something that makes it hard to tell where next the Oreo 8.1 update will land. But now that Samsung has begun seeding the update, it shouldn’t be long before the download notification arrives.
Alternatively, you can try forcing the update in Settings > About phone > System update and check for updates manually.
