Hello HTC Desire users, the first day of the new month has brought a great piece of news for you — it’s about Android 2.3 Gingerbread, which is now available for you to download and install manually. Nah, no Over-the-air (OTA) update this time but let’s be thankful to HTC to at least make this update available — but let’s keep this contention too, after all, even the X10 has got its share of Gingerbread now, and so as the Galaxy S (which has the best of them all and first of them all too, Android 2.3.4).

Anyways, even further good news is that in order to make the Gingerbread update even possible on Bravo (that’s Desire’s codename), HTC removed almost all the bloatware apps it’s used to bundling with Android. So, it should run faster than the opposite case – with all the HTC apps atop it. Sense is pretty limited too, which is also great you know.

To download the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update on your HTC Desire, go here, click download, agree to terms and let the download begin.

But this update isn’t meant for Desire phones all over the world. Users in Germany (Deutsch Telekom), North America, South America, South Korea and japan have been left wishing for now. The daring souls form these countries may still go on and install it (since it’s manual download and install via RUU – nobody’s knowing and stopping anyone), but users of those countries should be prepared to say goodbye to SMS and MMS functions of the mobile phone if trying this.

Plus, HTC recommends only the expert users to install it manually since it’s or developers only. But we know you, if you’re reading this, you’re in fact an an expert fella and would leave no stone unturned in getting the long-awaited Android 2.3 experience, now that it’s officially available.

Step-by-step Guide:

Well, it’s pretty easy to update using a RUU. But, here’s an instruction set for those who crave for it.

  1. Go here, click download, agree to terms and let the download begin.
  2. Do necessary backup of your phone since data will get lost and Apps will get removed along with data by the time you hug Gingerbread. This backup guide will help you. And if you’ve a rooted HTC Desire, titanium backup is the best app to take care of everything. Oh, I forgot, but you can use HTC Sync too to transfer the important data to PC and anyway, sync the contacts to Google contacts via accounts and sync in settings.
  3. Double click the downloaded RUU file. This will cause the HTC’s file to extract the relevant content in the temp directory, after which installation process would begin. You have to just wait till it pops up.
  4. When the screen shows up, just follow and keep following the the instructions to update the HTC Desire to official Android 2.3 build.

If you need further help, watch the video of us updating our HTC Desire to Gingerbread. You can try then, anyway.

-_- video coming soon -_-

If you need any help regarding this, do let us know in comments below. And share your thoughts with us, too.

Hey, gimme a screenshot of that. I’ll see what I can do. And some info: current firmware, your region, carrier, country, etc.

To upload pic, you may use tinypic or picasa or anything.

Hi Kapil, My current software number is 2.25.771.1, I am in the UK with three (H3G). Have tried running the RUU in “charge only” and “HTC sync” modes. Also tried to run it from bootloader screen – did not work at all. Have done soft and hard resets. Have performed factory reset from recovery mode. Did all of these things and tried to run the RUU after each step – no good.
when update gets stuck only solution is to pull the battery 🙁

      I appreciate your help!!

      Did you enable usb debugging?
go to “Applications”, “Development”, then tick “USB Debugging”.
If you debranded your phone, you will need the “gold card” you created, or make a new one.
Ensure correct drivers are present by installing current HTC Synch, then plugging in your phone. Once HTC Synch has recognised your phone, do not synch, exit HTC synch and execute RUU file. Follow instructions.
      Hope this helps.

the dialogue goes from “Waiting for Boot Loader” to “Erasing personal Data” completes to 100% very quickly (within 5-10 seconds) and then shows the message I have posted above as it is shown, the only thing that changes is the full stops after the word sending…. – they move over and then dissappear.

BTW I am running windows 7 pro 64 bit on an i7 Core with a ATI Radeon 6850 card and 6 Gb ram…

I’ve got US Cellular’s Desire, and I have 2.2 right now. when I try to do the update, I get error 130 saying that I have the wrong model. Any ideas?

    1. Guest Avatar

from what I can tell, this update is very flawed. I would recommend rooting and then flashing a better ROM from XDA dev’s website. If you do wish to continue with trying to apply this update, I would also definately advise making a goldcard + back up img before doing it (Titanium Backup will do a full image of your phone – you can use visionaryplus to give you temporary root access 🙂
