DesktopSMS Android App: Receive SMS on Gmail/gTalk/Google Chat and Send Reply Back

One of the most admired developer in Android blogosphere, Koushik Dutta — the inventor of ClockWorkMod recovery (you know about it him, right? — has just launched a new android app, called DesktopSMS. If you ever wanted to read SMS on your Desktop’s Gmail screen, or gTalk or Google Chat, this is a dream come true app to you — and it’s Free too. Not only receiving the SMS on desktop is easy but the you can even reply back and in fact have a full blown convo over this system. And not only the PC, or mac, but even your tablet can be used with it.

It’s pretty easy to use, too. All you have to do is install the app, open it and hit the “Login with Google Account”. This will ask your Google Account’s permission, select OK to allow it and then select your gmail account which you want to associate with the DesktopSMS app. Since it is in beta right now, you may have to do it again to make it work — at least I had to do it.

DOWNLOAD DESKTOPSMS (Free Beta)

Once you’ve given the permission, within few seconds app will be ready to use, you’ll get the “You have successfully signed in!” pop-up message, hit OK and you’re ready to go. Tick the checkboxes — to select Google Talk or Gmail or Both — where the app will forward the SMS received on your phone to. Now to check it how it works, simply open gmail / gtalk on PC and ask your friend to send a message to you. Soon, you’ll receive it on PC. You can reply back. You will be charged normal SMS charges of your carrier for every SMS you sent using the gmail/gtalk as if you sent it from phone only since it’s using your phone to send SMS back.

You DO NOT need Root for DesktopSMS. And it will be installed as user app – you can uninstall it anytime you want from settings – applications – manage applications.

It’s in trial and you may encounter bugs sometimes. Do give your feedback in the comments below and we’ll make sure that it reaches the Koush to help him perfect this very cute app.

Thanks Koush!
