How to delete messages on Facebook Messenger [4 methods]

There are multiple ways you can use to delete messages from Facebook Messenger.

Method 1: Remove newly sent messages (without a trace)

So you accidentally sent a message to the wrong person or misspelled a word when using Facebook Messenger. It happens and unless it’s already been over 10 minutes since you sent it, you can remove the message from the chat so that it’s no longer visible to anyone.

This works regardless of whether the message you want to delete was sent to a group or an individual.

Note: The ‘Remove for Everyone’ will only show up for 10 minutes after sending a message on Messenger. After that, you will only be able to remove the message from your inbox and not from others’ inboxes.

On Phone
  1. To delete a message that you’ve sent, open the Messenger app on your phone and go to the conversation where you sent the message.
  2. When the chat opens, long-press the message you want to delete and then tap on Remove.
  3. You will be asked whether you want the message to be deleted for just you or everyone in the thread.
  4. Tap on Remove for Everyone and then Remove again, if you don’t wish others to see the message that you have sent. You should do this within 10 minutes of sending the message.
  5. If you want the message to be deleted just for yourself, you can tap on Remove for You, which will also be the only option visible to you if it has been over 10 minutes since you sent the message on Messenger.
On PC
  1. To delete the message you have recently sent, open the Messenger app on your computer or go to messenger.com.

  4. If you don’t want the receiver to see your message, click on Remove for Everyone and then confirm by clicking Remove again.

You can do this only within 10 minutes of sending a message on Messenger.

Method 2: Delete a message or photo from a chat

You can also delete older messages that you sent or received on Facebook Messenger. Facebook allows you to delete a single message containing text, photos, video, or even a sticker.

  2. Inside Messenger, tap on Chats at the bottom and select the conversation you want to delete a message from.

Method 3: Delete a reaction to a message

In addition to sending texts, videos, and pictures to a person or a group, Messenger also lets you ‘react’ to someone else’s message through ‘Reactions’. You can react to a message using any pre-selected emojis available on the screen if you’re not actually in the mood for typing a word.

On Phone
  1. Open the Messenger app on your phone.
  2. Inside Messenger, select the conversation or chat where you sent a reaction.
  3. Now, long-press on the message you reacted to and select the emoji you used to react to the message previously.

  4. Click on this emoji icon and select the emoji you used to react to the message the first time. Your previously sent reaction will be highlighted with a blue dot under the emoji you reacted with.
  5. When you click on it, This reaction will disappear from the messenger screen.

Method 4: Delete an entire conversation
