PSA: Night Mode removed in Android 7.1.1 preview release

Google put up a hidden Night Mode setting under System Tuner UI on Android 7.0 Nougat release. However, there was no direct option to enable it so we used a Night Mode enabler app to activate it and found it really nice and thought it will make it to the next Android update. But that’s not what happened.

Earlier today, Google released Android 7.1.1 preview release for the Nexus 5X, 6P and Pixel C. And while looking for new features on the Android 7.1 update for Nexus devices, unfortunately, it turned out that the new update removed Night Mode from Nougat.

We tried the Night Mode enabler app, but it didn’t work. There is no Night Mode setting under System UI Tuner or a quick tile icon to enable Night Mode on Android 7.1.1.

What do you think of this move by Google? We personally liked the Night Mode setting on Nougat, it helps to reduce eye strain when using the device while sneaking inside the blanket or when lights are turned off at night time.

  1. Yeah, I have to tell you, not having night mode in this 7.1.1 update is a huge let down. It honestly was one of the best features in Nougat. Why Google? Why?

  9. I agree it was a nice feature for apps that worked with it, Netflix wasn’t one but prime videos was. I miss it on my tablet. Haven’t yet updated my phone to 7.1.1. Still contemplating.
