What to know
- Adaptations are permanent biological upgrades obtained from Angel Combs.
- Only four Adaptations are currently available in Subnautica 2 Early Access.
- Heat Tolerance and Axum Vision are major progression upgrades tied to dangerous late-game areas.
- Some Angel Combs must be cleansed before use using tools like the Sonic Resonator.
Subnautica 2 introduces a new progression system called Adaptations, which permanently evolve your character through alien biological mutations. Instead of relying entirely on crafted gear, the game now ties exploration and survival directly to your body’s evolution. These upgrades are obtained from giant organic structures known as Angel Combs, which are hidden throughout the world and often connected to major story progression.
Quick overview of all Adaptations in Subnautica 2
| Adaptation | Main Effect | Location | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pressure Tolerance | Survive underwater pressure | Tutorial area | Automatic |
| Digestion | Safely eat alien flora and fauna | North-northeast of Lifepod | None |
| Heat Tolerance | Resist volcanic heat damage | Northwest cave system | Sonic Resonator |
| Axum Vision | Interact with Axum technology | Deep eastern alien ruins | Story progression |
How Adaptations work in Subnautica 2
Adaptations act as permanent upgrades that unlock access to harsher environments and new gameplay systems. Each Adaptation changes how your character interacts with the world, whether that means surviving lava zones, consuming alien organisms safely, or understanding advanced alien structures.

Unlike standard equipment upgrades, Adaptations cannot be removed or lost. Once unlocked, the effect permanently becomes part of your character’s biology.
Pressure Tolerance adaptation explained
What Pressure Tolerance does
Pressure Tolerance is the first Adaptation you receive in Subnautica 2. It allows your character to survive underwater pressure safely and serves as the introduction to the Adaptation system.
Without this upgrade, your character cannot safely explore even the early underwater regions.

How to get Pressure Tolerance
This Adaptation is obtained automatically during the opening tutorial sequence near the Sampling Pavilion. It is part of the main introduction and cannot be missed.
Digestion adaptation explained
What Digestion does
Digestion allows your body to safely consume alien fish and plant life. Before obtaining this Adaptation, many organisms are biologically incompatible with humans.
This upgrade makes survival much easier because you gain access to far more food sources while exploring.

Where to find the Digestion Angel Comb
The Digestion Angel Comb is located approximately 160 to 180 meters north-northeast of the Lifepod near an underwater tree and early wreckage route. The area is relatively safe and accessible early in the game.

Interacting with the Angel Comb permanently unlocks the Digestion Adaptation.
Heat Tolerance adaptation explained
What Heat Tolerance does
Heat Tolerance protects your character from extreme thermal environments and volcanic regions. This is one of the most important mid-game Adaptations because several deeper biomes contain intense heat damage.

Without Heat Tolerance, exploring lava-heavy caves becomes extremely dangerous.
Where to find the Heat Tolerance Angel Comb
The infected Angel Comb is located roughly 200 meters northwest of the Lifepod inside a cave system around bearing 300°.

Unlike earlier Adaptations, this Angel Comb is corrupted by Bloom infection, and 3 Blooms must ne cleansed before activation and unlock of Heat Tolerance adaptation.
Requirements for Heat Tolerance
| Required Item | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Sonic Resonator | Destroy infected Bloom growths |
| Extra Oxygen Supply | Navigate long cave systems |
| Dash Biomod | Avoid hostile creatures |
Once the infection is cleared, interacting with the Angel Comb unlocks permanent Heat Tolerance.
Axum Vision adaptation explained
What Axum Vision does
Axum Vision allows you to perceive and interact with advanced Axum alien technology. Many alien systems and structures remain inaccessible until this Adaptation is unlocked.

It is currently one of the most story-important upgrades available in Early Access.
Where to find Axum Vision
Axum Vision is found in the deeper eastern alien ruins roughly 1,800 meters east of the Lifepod beyond the Tadpole Pens progression area.

The Adaptation becomes available later in the main story after reaching advanced Axum facilities.
Every Adaptation reward in Subnautica 2
| Adaptation | Permanent Benefit |
|---|---|
| Pressure Tolerance | Survive underwater pressure |
| Digestion | Eat alien organisms safely |
| Heat Tolerance | Resist thermal and lava damage |
| Axum Vision | Use and understand Axum technology |
Adaptations are one of the biggest progression systems in Subnautica 2 because they replace many traditional survival barriers. Instead of simply crafting stronger suits or equipment, you evolve biologically to survive the planet itself.
This system makes exploration feel more natural and encourages players to actively search for Angel Combs hidden across the world.
At the moment, only four confirmed Adaptations are fully accessible in Subnautica 2 Early Access. Each one unlocks new survival mechanics and opens access to previously dangerous areas. As the game continues to expand during Early Access, additional Adaptations will likely be added alongside new biomes and story content.
