A new update is rolling out for the Asus Zenfone 3, and given the OEM’s history with updates, it’s no wonder — even though fully embarrassing — that its flagship device, the Zenfone 3 (ZU680KL), is receiving the October security patch now, in January 2017.

The update comes as build number V13.6.15.21_20161215, and brings Google’s monthly security patch for the month of October when we’re seeing January patch for a device like Huawei P8. The update also installs bug fixes and other performance and stability improvements over the previous build.

Last month, the Zenfone 3 was spotted running Nougat, but that does not guarantee the update to roll out any time soon. This is mainly because Asus has a bad reputation when it comes to software updates, with smartphones lagging behind by half a year or more in some cases.

The Zenfone 3 comes in many variants set at different price brackets. The highest end Zenfone 3 Deluxe still hasn’t received its update to Nougat whereas competing OEMs have already updated their smartphones to Nougat.

CES should unveil some cool tech from Asus this year. Previously they held their their low light performance capabilities in their smartphones, but they’ll have to do much better than that now with Apple and Google taking the lead in camera technology.
