Samsung’s software team continues to impress us. First, they brought the Gingerbread update pretty soon and now they look set to update their Galaxy S phone with the latest version of Android for phone, Android 2.3.4 (Gingerbread). This feels so special because we Galaxy S owners has really hard time (read: very long time) getting the Android 2.2 Froyo update on our SGS which had launched with Android 2.1 Éclair.
But that’s past.
Now, we have the latest version of Android available to us. And even if it’s not launched by Samsung to your area, you can download the Android 2.3.4 ROM from link below and install it following the instructions set given below. Thanks Ficeto, who brought the news to us!
[info]This guide is applicable only for Samsung’s Galaxy S international version (i9000). If yours is Vibrant/Captivate/Fascinate/Epic 4G or any other Galaxy S variant, then this ROM — and Guide — is not for you, and that’s for definite.[/info]

Pre-installation thoughts:
- Backup your Apps and important data — bookmarks, contacts, SMS, APNs (internet settings), etc. This Android backup guide would help you.
- Disable Lagfix, if you’re using one. Use this Guide to disable/enable lagfix, if you need help!
- Drivers! — it’s important you’ve the proper drivers installed. For 32 bit (x86) Windows, download from here and for 64-bit (x64) Windows, download from here.
A very clean step-by-step guide is given below and would be more than enough for you to easily flash Android 2.3.4 Firmware on your Galaxy S. But in case you wanna watch the procedure on video, check out the video at the bottom of this post which shows flashing of an Android 2.3.3 Firmware — XXJVB — on Galaxy S. It would serve as a good guide to flash the Android 2.3.4 Firmware, XXJVP, too, since the since the process is almost same, except that there is no PIT file involved there and hence no ticking of the Re-partition box. The video is just for reference. You have to follow the steps given below only.
How to Install Android 2.3.4 Firmware on Galaxy S i9000 (international version):

Download the Android 2.3.4 Firmware – XXJVP. Filename: XXJVP-234.ZIP. Size: 247.03 MB. Download Link.

Download Odin3 v1.7.zip from here — Mediafire Link. Extract the zip file to get Odin3 v1.7.exe.
- Disconnect your phone if it’s connected to PC. Switch Off your phone. Wait for vibration to confirm complete switch off.
- Now, put it in Download Mode — press and hold these keys together: Volume_DOWN+Home+Power.
- Open Odin (from step 3). Connect your phone to PC now. You should get the message “Added! !” under the Odin’s message box.
- Important, tick the ‘Re-Partition’ checkbox while also keeping ‘Auto Reboot’ & ‘F. Reset Time’ checkboxes ticked. All the 3 checkboxes will be ticked.
- In Odin, place these files (check out the screenshot given at the top for help):
- In the PDA box, select this file (from step 2.1) — CODE_I9000XXJVP_CL264642_REV03_user_low_ship.tar.md5
- In the Phone box, select this file (from step 2.3) — MODEM_I9000XXJVP_REV_00_CL1019177.tar.md5
- In the CSC box, select this file (from step 2.2) — GT-I9000-CSC-MULTI-OXAJVP.tar.md5
- In the PIT box, select this file (from step 2.4) — s1_odin_20100512.pit
- Double check everything said in step 7 and 8 above. Your Odin’s window should look real similar to the image at the very top — which is my Odin’s screen while I flashed the XXJVP on my super Galaxy S.
- Now, hit the START button to let the process begin. When process at Odin finishes your phone will automatically reboot. You can unplug the cable now.
When your phone has restarted, you are on the XXJVP Android 2.3.4 Firmware on your phone. Congrats!
Check your phone’s version here: Press Options -> Settings -> Scroll down and select About Phone -> Scroll down and check your version.

i upgraded my samsung galaxy s i9000T to XXJVP rom yesterday. And since than my mobile is performing worst than before. Its draining battery like anythng.
My GPRS isnt working properly, its operating at a very low speed i’m not able to download files, small applications from market of even 2-3 MB is taking hours to download and most of the time the downloading/installation fails. Some widgets are not working e.g feeds and update isnt able to connect with my facebook account. To my surprise i cant do anything while i’m on call beacuse i’m nt allowed to minimize it. The only thing i can do is to see my contact list . Please help…. is it possible for me to switch back to stock version of android which i had earlier ???? please help ….
Also i would like to mention that i did the entire installation as per the instrctions given above but without rooting the phone. Is that the reason for all this under performance !!!!!
Do Factory Reset from the phone’s recovery… This should fix it. But
remember, this will delete your settings and data, so make a backup before.

Got it thanks!! So now I’m in… everything looks good but I can’t make any calls because it is not automatically connecting to my mobile network which is T-mobile… what am I missing?

Hey, I think you should flash this stock firmware — T959UVKA7. But know this, We are not responsible for anything if any damage occurs to your phone.
Download the firmware from this link – http://www.multiupload.com/E5HF1W9MU4 (pssword is samfirmware.com). You can find all the vibrant firmwares here: http://www.samfirmware.com/WEBPROTECT-samsungusa.htm (register and login if required).
Use the Odin3 v1.7 and also use the .pit file that you already have from xxjvp flashing but don’t use any of the xxjvp file.
The file you download – T959UVKA7.rar – will have one tar file which is what you will put in the pda tab. Leave the other two tabs – Phone and CSC – blank. Then, put the .pit file in the PIT tab. Make sure all the three checkboxes are ticked — Re-Partition, Auto Reboot, F. Reset Time.
I think you already know hot to go to download mode — since you’ve flashed xxjvp. I hope it helps.
Once again, I have not tested anything on Vibrant (I don’t have this phone and in fact, never saw it in real), so you only will be responsible for anything you opt to do or not opt to do. You’ve been warned — and this isn’t advertisement (haha!) Good luck!

Got it thanks!! So now I’m in… everything looks good but I can’t make any calls because it is not automatically connecting to my mobile network which is T-mobile… what am I missing?

OK… serious problem here… how do I use Odin to flash a different OS onto this thing! I didnt read the little blue box that says this is not for the Vibrant!! I know stupid.. I thought it was an advertisement…. how do I reset the phone or how do I put on an operating system that will work? Thanks for your help!

I think you can use Vibrant’s stock firmware to go back to Samsung’s default
OS.
But just lemme check first what ROM is the best one. The procedures should
be similar since this will also involve Odin, so you want need separate set
of instructions.

I have just done it. For me it´s working good. I have to test it better before to conclude more. The interface is much better than the one of the 2.1 droid I was using. Thanks for this guide!

Guys I got stuck right at the RESET with the blue background comes on ODIN. Should I reset the phone? If yes should I do that by just turning it off and then on again?
ANy help for a first timer?
Try again. Remove the battery and put it back. Close and open Odin, too.

Kapil, I have 2 questions for my GT-i9000. First of all, I have upgraded my GT-i9000 to 2.3.3 through skies (DDJV6). Now, 1) Will I be able to upgrade to 2.3.4 xxjvp through ur guide? 2) Will gtalk video chat work in XXJVP ?
You can follow the guide to upgrade your phone but I don’t think it’s got
with-video version of gTalk — but I think there is a hack for that which
can be flashed separately; and it’s available both for jv6 and jvp. So, if
you want to upgrade to xxjvp, you are good to go.
Btw, I noticed your wall post on fb page too. But replying back is here.

Thanks for the nice post. It helped updating ROM (from Australian Vodafone 2.2) to 2.3.4. There is a substantial gain in battery life – almost double juice now.
