Update [October 14, 2016]: There is nothing new on the Nougat front since we last has the privilege of sharing with you a document leak, but there is still a small update out for Xperia Z2 we should share with you guys. It’s a small 1.1 MB update, and comes with build no. 1.1.A.0.1. The update brings the latest security patch, and that’s it. Of course, it’s based on 6.0.1. Though, if you want Nougat, check out the CM14 page linked in 2 paras below.
Update [September 26, 2016]: We now have the expected release date of Sony Nougat update available, as the new Sony Nougat update related document leak reveals. The first Sony devices to rock the Nougat update will be the Xperia XZ and X Performance sets, in October 2016.
Next would be Xperia X and X Compact, set for November, while the Z5, Z5 Premium and Z5 Compact getting to taste the Nougat update by December 2016. The devices set for early 2017 Nougat treatment, thus are, Xperia XA and XA Ultra.
So, yes, neither the Xperia Z3, nor the Xperia Z2, are part of the official Nougat update plans. But you will be glad to know that the Android 7.0 update is available for manual installation as an unofficial update → check out CM14 ROM page here.
The developer community has long ported one device’s ROM for other device, like the Galaxy S6 ROM for S5, that brings with that the new UI and latest apps of the OEM to its last gen device. That is interesting, but it becomes totally super-duper cool when you get to taste Android Nougat update thanks to a ROM port.
Developer Brandon Nel over at XDA has successfully ported the Nougat update’s DP3 (developer preview 3) build for Xperia Z3, to Xperia Z2. And this gives the Z2 users a surprisingly chance to run Android Nougat right now.
Of course, this comes with its set of drawbacks: right now, both Wi-Fi and camera aren’t working. While everything other is said to be working all fine, stability of the ROM overall could be an issue, and then there is a pointer issue with the ROM as of today, 21st August.

Installing the ROM isn’t a simple zip flash via TWRP recovery either. You need lot of preparation and all right things installed as base in order to get this working alright. The developer has put together all the required downloads and a guide to follow, so that you easily install Nougat update on your Xperia Z2, which is linked below.

Click the link above to go to the development page of Nougat ROM for Xperia Z2, where you can keep an eye on latest development (current ROM bugs), and download the latest ROM too that may be free of bugs currently associated with the ROM. FYI, You will need root access and TWRP recovery, installing which voids your device’s warranty — although we still love both root and TWRP recovery installed on our device.
