Following the impressive reception of the Redmi Note 5 Pro in India, Xiaomi went ahead and unveiled a slightly tweaked version of the phone in China and called it Redmi Note 5. Among the tweaks the Chinese model gets are a better camera and the new Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box.
Given that the Redmi Note 5 Pro already has an active development community, it didn’t take them long to bring the Oreo-based ROM to the Indian model. Similarly, it hasn’t taken them long to come in with an unofficial LineageOS 15.1 build for the handset. This ROM is based on Oreo 8.1 and the best part is that it mostly works perfectly.
Here’s what’s working perfectly so far:
- RIL (Calls, SMS, Data)
- VoLTE
- Fingerprint sensor
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
- Camera/video recording
- Video/audio playback
- Flash, LED, sensors, GPS, etc.
Keep in mind that installing the latest LineageOS 15.1 ROM on your Redmi Note 5 Pro requires an unlocked bootloader. Furthermore, TWRP recovery is needed, which, fortunately, is already available.
When all is said and done, follow these steps to install the ROM:
- If your Redmi Note 5 Pro has a locked bootloader, follow the instructions in this article up to step 4, which includes installing TWRP.
- If you already have an unlocked bootloader, proceed and download the unofficial LineageOS 15.1 ROM here. The developer also recommends downloading the latest Open GApps.
- Reboot into recovery mode and flash the downloaded ROM and GApps to your phone.
