Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus are approaching a year since their launch. The duo has Android 7.1.2 Nougat out of the box and is guaranteed an update to Android Oreo.
In fact, the Redmi 5 Plus has already received an update that brings Android 8.1 Oreo, but those on the standard Redmi 5 are still waiting for the update to arrive. Despite the latter case, Redmi 5 users, just like those using the Plus variant, also want to know if the device will be upgraded to Android 9 Pie, the latest OS in town.
Well, we have some answers for you, although not an official communication from Xiaomi.
Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus won’t receive Android 9 Pie update
Xiaomi hasn’t announced its official Android 9 Pie plans, but we have a rough idea of if and when the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus will be updated to Pie. Our guess is based on previous experience with the company’s devices in the Redmi series, more so the recent predecessor to the Redmi 5.
Typically, the Redmi series gets a single OS upgrade, which is what happened to the Redmi 4. Given both the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus have Android Nougat out of the box, the only other OS upgrade the duo can expect is Android Oreo. As pointed out earlier, Oreo is already rolling out to the Plus variant and is expected to arrive on the standard model probably before the end of 2018.
If you badly want Android Pie on your Redmi 5 or Redmi 5 Plus, though, you may have to seek refuge in custom ROMs, which you can bet will be plenty considering how popular the two devices are across the globe.
