The Redmi 2 from Xiaomi is a budget device aimed primarily at China, but equally suitable for markets like India and Asia. Nevertheless, being a budget device doesn’t stops devs at CyanogenMod from cooking up the latest and greatest custom ROM based on Android 7.1.1 for the device.
This is the second lease of life that the Redmi 2 is given as it has also previously supported CM13 based on Marshmallow. In terms of specifications the Redmi 2 doesn’t have any ground breaking internals, but it does packs a punch for its price, which Moto G, which also has CM14.1 ROM, was a competitor to it.
Other Xiaomi devices to get CM 14.1 include the flagship Mi 5, the power packed Redmi Note 3 and the mammoth Mi Max. More devices are also expected to be updated to the latest iteration of CyanogenMod too.
What is surprising here is that freelance developers at XDA and CyanogenMod work day in and out and bring us timely updates, based on latest version of Android, which makes one ask why OEMs can’t do this.
We can only assume that OEMs are interested in pushing out more and more new devices than updating existing ones. So Kudos to our friends at XDA and CyanogenMod!
