The flagship Xiaomi Mi5 has already been succeeded by the Mi5s. Nevertheless the Mi5 presented top notch specifications and performance to compete with other flagships from different OEMs. In terms of hardware Xiaomi knows what the users prefer. With that being said, not everyone is pleased with the user experience that Xiaomi provides.
Most people are okay with MIUI that runs over Android in Xiaomi smartphones. MIUI is not bad in anyway and features a ton of useful customization. But the OS often fails to impress pro Android users for the lack of stock Android experience. And this is where CyanogenMod comes into play.
The official CyanogenMod 14.1 nightly builds are now available for the Xiaomi Mi5. Although there are certain issues/bugs present on the CM14.1 nightly builds currently, but nothing is too serious too stop you from using the ROM as your daily driver.
If you prefer to remain loyal to Xiaomi you can always go back to the stock MIUI 8 that came with the device. Last month Xiaomi started testing Nougat with an Alpha build. So we can expect the official rollout to take place by early 2017 at the most.
