What to know
- Gmail now embeds Gemini AI tools directly in your inbox to help with summarization, writing, and prioritizing messages.
- AI Overviews can summarize threads and answer natural-language questions about your inbox using Gemini.
- New writing helpers like Help Me Write, Suggested Replies, and Proofread aim to speed composition; some features are free, and others require subscriptions.
- Google is also testing an AI Inbox that highlights to-dos and important items from the emails you receive.
Google has officially announced that Gmail is “entering the Gemini era” — a rollout of AI-powered capabilities across its email service, intended to make it work more like a personal assistant than a traditional inbox. The update begins with Gmail users in the United States, with broader availability planned over time.
At the center of this shift is Gemini 3, Google’s latest and most advanced large language model, which now powers several new Gmail features.
AI Overviews bring natural-language understanding into your email workflow. Instead of scrolling through long email threads or digging with keywords, you can get a quick summary of key points — or even ask questions like “what was the price in that quote from January?” and receive a concise answer generated by AI. Advanced summary skills are rolling out to all users, and the ability to ask conversational questions of your inbox is available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
For composing and replying, Gmail now includes Help Me Write, Suggested Replies (an upgrade to Smart Replies), and Proofread tools. These help you draft, refine, and finish messages more quickly — from simple responses to more polished drafts. Some of these, like Help Me Write and Suggested Replies, are free for all users; more powerful proofreading and personalization features require subscription tiers.
Another big part of the update is the AI Inbox, an experimental view that organizes your incoming email into actionable items and priorities. It surfaces suggested to-dos (like follow-ups, appointments, and bills) and highlights key topics, turning your email list into an organized briefing tailored to what matters most.
Google emphasizes that these tools use advanced AI while preserving user privacy — assuring that Gmail content won’t be used to train Gemini models — and that you can disable AI features if you prefer.
The rollout is starting with English and U.S. accounts, as well as Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, and is expected to expand to more regions and languages over the coming months.
