Android 5.1 update for Moto G 2nd Gen isn’t new, it arrived via SOKP ROM only yesterday, but having a one more option in hand isn’t a bad idea, right? Hence we thought we should let you know about the cool ROM Hyperdrive-OS we came across today for your Moto G 2014 edition.

Even though based on ever-reliable-for ROMs Cyanogenmod, the Hyperdrive adds plenty of optimization tricks and useful features of its own.

Situation on Motorola devices as regards updates isn’t really that dire as it’s on Samsung and LG devices for example, but folks who can’t just keep away from the latest update on world’s hottest OS, have a chance to try it out using a custom ROM. So, even though Motorola should be sending the Android 5.1 OTA on a month or so towards your Moto G, you could very well go ahead and install the Hyperdrive ROM to get Android 5.1 update right away.

When you wish to get the Android 5.1 OTA when it’s out, you’ll need to go back to stock recovery, or better, just downgrade back to pre-5.1 stock firmware. That way, you’ll get notification of 5.1 update you’ll be able to remove the Hyperdrive or any other Android 5.1 ROM and be able to install OTA update.

Note: This is not an official Motorola Android 5.1 update, so expect few kinks at some corners of the ROM. Any major bugs will be reported below.

Download the ROM file in .zip format from the source development page here, where you could also keep a tab on current issues with the ROM and fixes, if any, available. Also download the Gapps from here.

Important Note: Backup important files stored on your device before proceeding with the steps below, so that in case something goes wrong you’ll have backup of all your important files.

  1. Transfer the ROM file package file to your device’s internal storage and remember the location where you save it.
  2. You need TWRP recovery for this. Get it from here. There’s good instructions set there, too. For more help, Google is your friend.
  3. Boot into Recovery mode.
  4. Once in TWRP recovery, take a backup of your current ROM. Select Backup, then do a “Swipe to Back Up” on the bottom of the screen.
  5. Once the backup is finished, select Wipe, then do a “Swipe to Factory Reset” on the bottom of the screen.
  6. Go back to the main menu of TWRP recovery and select Install.
  7. Navigate to the file where you saved your ROM’s zip file, select it and “Swipe to Confirm Flash” on the bottom of the screen. Now wait until the flashing process finishes.
  8. Go to back to recovery’s Main menu, select Reboot » select System.

Your device will now reboot with Android 5.1 update, thanks to Hyperdrive custom ROM.
