What to know

  • Proximity chat in Fortnite is currently available in limited-time modes like Delulu and on some Creative/UEFN maps.
  • To use proximity chat, set your Voice Chat option to “Everybody” and save settings.
  • Creative map creators need to manually enable proximity chat through their Island Settings.
  • The feature changes how players interact, only letting voices carry within range and fading out as distance increases.

Proximity chat allows players to communicate only with others within a certain in-game range. Instead of hearing everyone in your lobby or team, you’ll only hear players who are physically near your character. Epic Games first introduced the feature for UEFN (Unreal Editor for Fortnite) maps, giving creators control over how far voices carry and how volume fades with distance.

It’s worth noting that proximity chat isn’t active in standard Battle Royale matches yet, though it’s been tested in new experimental modes like Delulu, where all players can talk to each other if they’re nearby on the island.

Where is proximity chat available

Mode / Map Type Proximity Chat Option Enabling Steps
Delulu Mode (Battle Royale) Yes Set Voice Chat to Everybody, join Delulu from Compete tab.
Creative / UEFN Islands Yes, if enabled Map creator must toggle Proximity Chat ON in Island settings.
Standard Battle Royale No Not available outside special events.
Zero Build No Only when Delulu mode is running.

How to turn on proximity chat in Fortnite Creative and UEFN maps

If you’re playing or creating a map that supports proximity chat, you can easily enable it through in-game settings.

For players joining a Creative or UEFN map

Step 1

Join a map that has proximity chat enabled (it must be turned on by the map’s creator).

Step 2

Open the Settings Menu and go to the Communications tab.

Step 4

Change Voice Chat to Everybody so you can hear non-teammates nearby.

Step 5

Choose Open Mic or Push to Talk for your Voice Chat Method.

Step 6

Ensure your microphone is properly connected and not muted.

Step 7

Switch to Game Channel from the chat interface. Proximity voice only works in Game Channel, not Party Chat.

Once active, voices will fade with distance, creating a more realistic communication environment.

For island creators

Step 1

Open your island in Fortnite Creative or the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN).

Step 2

Go to Island Settings.

Step 3

Navigate to the Mode or Game tab to find Voice Chat Options.

Step 4

Locate the Proximity Chat setting and toggle it On.

Step 5

Set the Full Volume Distance — this controls how close players must be to hear each other clearly.

Step 6

Adjust the Falloff Distance — this defines how quickly the voice fades as distance increases.

Step 7

Save and publish the island to make the settings active.

When the map goes live, proximity chat will automatically work for players in the Game Channel.

Proximity chat in Battle Royale: the Delulu mode

Epic Games recently rolled out proximity voice chat in a special mode called Delulu. This mode brings proximity-based communication into Battle Royale for the first time. Players in Delulu must keep Voice Chat enabled and set to Everybody before queuing for a match.

The feature remains experimental and may not always be active, but it’s part of Epic’s ongoing effort to expand proximity voice to more game types. According to Epic’s community team, strict moderation systems automatically monitor chat behavior, and thousands of players have already faced bans for inappropriate language in this mode.

Fortnite’s proximity chat transforms familiar play, making encounters unpredictable and communication vital. From spontaneous team-ups to tense betrayals, the feature adds a unique layer of excitement and tactics not seen in standard modes. With Epic evolving the playlist and creator tools, expect proximity chat to further shape the way players connect and compete in the months ahead.
