Smartron debuts Sachin Tendulkar branded srt.phone

The Indian OEM, Smartron, doesn’t really ring a bell when you first hear of it. That’s because it is new to the smartphone game. But they have a new phone they want you to buy, and to really make an impression on you, they have the Cricketing genius, Sachin Tendulkar, present it to you — in fact, it’s even named after him, a sit’s dubbed srt.phone (Sachin’s full name is Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar, ya’know!).

We wouldn’t blame you if you would classify the smartphone as just another mid-ranger, but there are a few very interesting features on this device which sets it apart from competing OEMs.

To start with, let’s look at the specs that the srt.phone packs in. The device features a 5.5-inch 1080p IPS panel, 4GB of RAM, 13MP rear shooter, 5MP front camera, 32GB or 64GB storage options and a 3000mAh battery. There is no expandable storage and the device has a removable back with the fingerprint sensor located there too. All this looks pretty standard till now.

Things start to change when you get to know that the display is protected with Gorilla Glass 3 and there is also NFC on board along with the whole host of necessary sensors. The processor on board is the octa-core Snapdragon 652 chipset, which is a pretty solid performer with four Cortex A72 cores and four Cortex A53 cores. These are specs which are usually omitted as cost saving measures in competing devices from Xiaomi and the like.

To add to the twists, Smartron is shipping the srt.phone with a near stock build of Android 7.1.1 Nougat on board. Pretty cool seeing this from an Indian OEM. And what’s more is that Smartron has promised three major update cycles for the device. This is a pretty steep claim and if the company manages to follow it through, they have a good chance of becoming a noteworthy brand in the mid range market.

The portfolio of devices from Smartron currently come up to only three. The OEM has integrated tron.x which provides a sort of hub for seamless use between its own devices and the srt.phone also includes unlimited t.cloud storage for backing up settings, photos, contacts and messages.

The srt.phone is retailing at INR 12,999 (approx. $202) for the 32GB variant and INR 13,999 (approx. $218) for the 64GB variant. The smartphone is sure to gain traction in India as Sachin Tendulkar holds a place in the hearts of millions of Indian cricket fans.

  1. for the first time an Indian Company got everything right in the smartphone, with Micromax making phones like Dual5 at a hefty 25k pricetag with not that great features this phone is a life saver for Indian smartphone fans!! this is not the first time smartron launching a phone, there first phone was a flop coz it supported outdated features at the time of launch with high price but this phone has all that a customer need at 14-15k price point!! best things be both the 32 and 64GB models comes with 4GB of RAM and a powerful SD652 processor, has a FHD display with GGlass protection, standard 3000mAh battery, a cool 13 & 5MP camera combo and NFC as well, all the things we expected from Redmi Note4 r here in this phone with Android 7.0 out of the box, but the only drawback I found was despite having a removable back this phone doesn’t support an external memory card but an overall great device!!

  2. Looks like they are off to a great start with their first phone. Without offering some uncompromised and fulfilling like this, no company can have an effective impact and survive in this market simply because there are too many companies trying to do the same.
A little bit of a weird advertising approach to name the phone after the cricket maestro and use him to launch it but maybe it works and gets people’s attention as it is supposed to.
What I really liked is they haven’t seem to have compromised with any hardware for cost cutting. They are using Snapdragon processors while most companies would use mediatek at this range.
It is a good start. But maintaining is harder. I hope they keep up
