On Wednesday, SRI International announced an exclusive license of Iris on the Move (IOM) technologies. These technologies will be used by Samsung on its mobile products. Also, SRI has made a supply agreement to debut with the production and sales of the Samsung products embedded with IOM technology for B2B applications.
The first product from Samsung to arrive with this supply agreement is the customized variant of the Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 tablet. This slate will arrive with an in-built IOM iris module.
This IOM embedded Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 will be announced during the SIA New Product Showcase at ISC West 2015. Notably, this is the largest security industry trade show in the United States. The tablet will be offered on a global basis via SRI partners and resellers.
The IOM embedded model will render faster, easy-to-use, and a more accurate biometric identity management solution to the consumers. Tests on this technology have shown that the iris-based solution is over 1,000 times more accurate in comparison to published fingerprint data.
Regarding this, Mark Clifton, the President of Products and Solutions at SRI International stated that the next-generation IOM iris recognition solution is aimed at creating new applications and markets. It is also claimed to increase the adoption in existing markets.
Initial adopters of this new product are sought after for several security and identity management applications. This new technology will be included to the end-to-end IOM biometric products from SRI that are meant to perform accurate and effortless identity authentication in order to rationalize security and to improve the overall user experience as well.
IOM products are usually suitable for use in airports, access control, workforce management, and other security applications. These can be used in systems for indoor and outdoor operation as well.
Notably, Samsung was claimed to incorporate iris technology for security reasons in its yesteryear flagship models such as Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4, but it did not happen. We can expect the future models to come with this feature as SRI and Samsung have teamed up for the purpose.
