Samsung is finally doing away with the Edge moniker in its upcoming flagship phone, Galaxy S8. According to a report out of Korea, there won’t be any flat screen variant of Galaxy S8 this year. The device will come in two variants and both will feature Edge displays, but just won’t use the Edge moniker anymore.

The next Samsung flagship will be simply called Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus, as previous rumors also suggested. The Galaxy S8 Plus will be a variant of the device with a larger display and might also feature a slightly better hardware like Apple does with its iPhone and iPhone Plus devices.

Samsung first used the Edge moniker in Galaxy Note Edge, and then for the Galaxy S6 Edge, S6 Edge Plus and S7 Edge. The Edge name was used for devices with Edge (curved) displays by Samsung. However, with the Galaxy S8, the Korean tech giant seems to completely ditch the flat screen variant for its premium device and is completely going for Edge displays for all variants of the device, hence not differentiating with the Edge name anymore.

The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus are rumored for to release in mid-April 2017. And a small batch of devices might even reach as early as February or March. We’ll be keeping a close watch for any other leaks about the device’s availability. Stay tuned..
