Root AT&T Infuse 4G and Install Clockworkmod CWM Recovery with UCLB3 Firmware

UCLB3 is the latest Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread firmware for the AT&T Samsung Infuse 4G. And thanks to XDA Forum Member jscott30, you can flash a pre-rooted UCLB3 firmware that also has ClockworkMod (CWM) recovery pre-installed. This is very useful if you want to flash a custom ROM on your phone, as it can be used as a starting point before trying to attempt to install custom ROMs and the like.

Remember to read each and every step below carefully before attempting the procedure, so that you don’t miss anything and have no problems in flashing the firmware. Read everything twice if you have to.

Read on to find out how you can install the rooted UCLB3 firmware on your AT&T Infuse 4G.

Compatibility

This ROM and the guide below is compatible only and only with AT&T Infuse 4G, model number I997. It’s not compatible with any other device. Do not try this even on the Rogers Infuse 4G. Check your device’s model number in: Settings » About phone. If it’s not I997, please do not attempt this.

Warning!

The methods and procedures discussed here are considered risky and you should not attempt anything if you don’t know completely what it is. If any damage occurs to your device, we won’t be held liable.

How to Install UCLB3 Firmware with Root and ClockworkMod Recovery on AT&T Infuse 4G

  1. This procedure will wipe all your apps, data and settings (but it will NOT touch your SD cards, so don’t worry about those). Backup your Apps and important data — bookmarks, contacts, SMS, APNs (internet settings), etc. This Android backup guide would help you.
Important! Don’t forget to at least make a backup of your APN settings, which you can restore later if your data connection does not work after installing the ROM. Use the backup guide to find out how.
  2. Download and install the drivers for the phone on the computer.
    Download links: 32 bit (x86) Windows | 64-bit (x64) Windows
  3. Download the UCLB3 firmware package.
Download Link  |  Alternate Link  |  Filename: SGH-I997_UCLB3_CWM_root_deodex_busybox.rar
  4. Extract the SGH-I997_UCLB3_CWM_root_deodex_busybox.rar file downloaded above using a software like 7-zip or WinRAR to a convenient location on your computer.
  5. After extraction, you’ll get a folder named SGH-I997_UCLB3_CWM_root_deodex_busybox with the following 3 files inside it:
    1. I997UCLB3-CWM-root-deodex-busybox.tar.md5
    2. Odin3 v1.7.exe
    3. Readme.txt [ignore this one]
  6. Now, turn off your phone, then boot into recovery. To do this, turn the phone off, disconnect USB cable, hold the Volume Up + Volume Down + Power buttons together, release the power button when Samsung logo appears, but continue to hold volume buttons until recovery screen appears, then let go of them.
  7. Here, using the volume keys, highlight the delete all user data option and select it using the power button. Select Yes on the next screen (using the power button) to confirm data wipe. Remember, this will only wipe your apps and settings, but will leave all your personal files on the SD card intact.
  8. After data wipe, go back to the main recovery menu, then select reboot system now. Important! Once the phone starts rebooting, remove the battery. Then re-insert the battery (but don’t turn the phone on again) and go to the next step.
  9. Open Odin (from step 5.2) — double-click the Odin3 v1.7.exe file.
  10. Click on the PDA button in Odin, then select I997UCLB3-CWM-root-deodex-busybox.tar.md5 file obtained in step 5.1.
  11. Now, put the Infuse 4G in Download Mode — connect USB cable to PC, then connect the cable to the phone while pressing and holding the Volume Up and Down buttons. The phone will say Downloading on the screen.
  12. After connecting phone to computer in download mode, Odin will say Added!! in the message box below. If it does not, make sure the drivers are installed (step 2).
  13. Click the Start button in Odin to start flashing the UCLB3 firmware on your Infuse 4G. After flashing is complete, you’ll get PASS message in Odin and the phone will automatically reboot. You can now safely disconnect the phone from the computer.
IMPORTANT Note: If ODIN gets stuck and doesn’t seem to be doing anything, or you get a FAIL message (with red background) in ODIN, disconnect the phone from the PC, close ODIN, remove battery, re-insert it, and do the procedure again from Step 9.
  14. If you encounter any roadblocks while flashing the firmware, let us know and we’ll help you out.

The UCLB3 firmware is now installed on your AT&T Infuse 4G, rooted and with ClockworkMod recovery installed. Let us know how it works for you, in the comments below.

    1. Don’t select Re-Partition checkbox. It needs to be selected/ticked only when using the PIT file in PIT box in Odin. So, just do as said above, don’t check uncheck anything else than as above!

    1. Odin 3.04 got it working for me. Even after I had an incident of the phone getting shut down mid-flash after Odin 1.7.1 failing out on me several times and getting stuck on ‘Setting Connection…’ on others. Thanks so much!
