Punit Soni involved in building and selling startups, launching products at Google and worked with Motorola in its turnaround has now been hired by India’s largest e-commerce firm Flipkart. He will be leading the Product Strategy at Flipkart.
Flipkart and its fashion arm Myntra are facing a tough battle with the US based Amazon. In order to continue to lead the e-commerce market, Flipkart requires enhanced product management skills along with market insight and experience.
Regarding this, Huggo Barra, Vice President at Xiaomi stated that Punit Soni is the most fastest and significant software revamp that the industry has seen and he has made Motorola evolve as a new and successful brand.
Having seen Soni’s work from close quarters while working at Google, he claimed that Punit has a complete understanding of the product design and iteration cycle and to drive resources to come up with mega ambitious objectives.
Soni came up with the first iteration of Google’s mobile products and he worked with Vic Gundotra to launch the social network Google+ when Larry Page, the CEO wanted to overtake on Facebook.
The notable highlight of his career was the turnaround of Motorola. The brand was almost dead in India and it made a comeback in the last year with its new products and marketing techniques.
Once Google acquired Motorola Mobility, Punit Soni took charge to revamp the brand with a team of over 50 product managers. The firm increased its strength from 3,000 to 39,000 people and also announced a couple of smartphones.
Punit Soni belonging to the Silicon Valley’s elite group of technologists is the most expensive and ambitious hires made by Flipkart till date. He will be the Chief Product Officer and will take charge of innovation and product definition for the consumer products of Flipkart, marketplace and transaction platform.
Soni stated that his role in Flipkart will be to focus on driving the product strategy, design, analytics and marketing to create a great user interface and solutions. He is likely to implement Google’s work culture in Flipkart by assigning small empowered teams that will work on products that will come up with deep technical insights.
