  • Creators can appeal if their content is mislabeled as AI-generated.

Pinterest is introducing new features to address the growing presence of AI-generated images, often called 'AI slop,' on its platform. Many users have complained that AI-generated Pins are making it harder to find genuine, human-created content. In response, Pinterest will now label images that are detected as AI-generated or AI-modified.

When you click on an image Pin to view it closely, you will see an 'AI Modified' label in the bottom left corner if Pinterest's systems detect that the image was created or changed using generative AI. The company uses both image metadata and its own AI classifiers to identify such content, even if the AI use is not obvious. If your content is labeled incorrectly, you can appeal the decision through Pinterest's appeals process.

To give you more control over your feed, Pinterest is also testing a 'see fewer' option. This feature will let you reduce the amount of generative AI content you see in specific categories, such as beauty or art. You can access this option from the three-dot menu on the bottom right of a Pin. Pinterest plans to expand this feature to more categories in the future.

These changes come after months of user feedback and concerns about the impact of AI-generated images on the platform's quality and trust. Pinterest says it is committed to helping users make informed choices about the content they see and will continue to improve its detection systems over time. The company believes that generative AI can still be a source of inspiration if used thoughtfully and transparently.

By adding clear labels and giving users more control, Pinterest aims to restore confidence in its platform and ensure that human creativity remains at the center of its community.
