OnePlus 5T is not waterproof

Last week, OnePlus launched their latest flagship, the OnePlus 5T, to much fanfare. The new smartphone looks exactly like the 6-month old OnePlus 5, except for the display. You can’t tell any difference between the two by looking at the back of the phones.

However, the OnePlus 5T features a larger 6-inch display with minimum bezels and an improved rear camera setup. But, there is one feature that is still missing from this flagship. The OnePlus 5T is not waterproof!

Yes, there have been some videos online that show that the older OnePlus 5 can survive under water for a short period of time. However, a tear-down of the device has shown that the company hasn’t used any sealant or adhesive to protect the insides of the phone.

OnePlus CEO did state in an interview that the phone is slightly water resistant.Unfortunately, the company believes waterproofing isn’t a big consumer requirement and that it would add bulk to the phone.

The OnePlus 5T doesn’t have any IP rating either, making it one of the only flagships to not include the feature. Most high end flagships today are usually water resistant and carry a rating of IP67 or above. We’re sure OnePlus could’ve included this feature without inflating the price.

So yes, if you’re planning on getting the new OnePlus 5T, which goes on sale today, then you should probably avoid taking it for a swim or throwing it into the ocean.

Would you have liked the OnePlus 5T to have a waterproof rating? Is an IP rating important to you when purchasing an expensive smartphone?
