Nokia brand is back in the smartphone business thanks to a company known as HMD Global that has acquired rights to release their smartphones under the iconic brand. It’s good to have Nokia Android phones, right? Well, while Nokia has provided us with some decent phones in the short period of existence, what about the software update support, like Android Oreo or even Android Pie?
Well, as things stand right now, all Nokia phones that came with Android Nougat have already made their switch to Android Oreo, be it 8.0 or 8.1. And now attention has turned to Android 9 Pie, the latest version in town.

Nokia 8 and 8 Sirocco Android Pie update
Expected release date: Q4 2018
The Nokia 8 Sirocco was the star of HMD’s MWC 2018 event and while we expected it to come preinstalled with Android 8.1 Oreo, HMD only managed to give us Oreo 8.0. Nonetheless, the fact that the device has been testing Android Pie for several weeks means that the update to the stable version shoudn’t be too far away.
In fact, we won’t be surprised if the phone gets Android Pie somewhere towards the end of Q3 2018, but even if it doesn’t it won’t be long before the OS rolls out.
The above is true for the standard Nokia 8, which should also be upgraded to Android Pie at about the same time as the Sirocco.

Nokia 7 and 7 Plus Android Pie update
Expected release date: September 2018
Another impressive phone to star at the MWC 2018 was the Nokia 7 Plus. This was the first from the company to embrace the trending 18:9 design, but like the Nokia 8 Sirocco, you get Oreo 8.0 out of the box alongside a promise for Android Pie. In fact, the Nokia 7 Plus is the only HMD device that got the offiical nod to try Android Pie beta and if Google’s words are to be believed, the stable rollout shoukd begin by the end of fall.
There are some reports coming from India with claims that the Pie update is rolling out to the Nokia 7 Plus, but it’s likely to be another beta update and not the stable version as revealed in this tweet by Nokia. The company’s top leadership has also confirmed that Android 9 Pie stable update will begin rolling out in September, which is basically what we expected.
Although the standard Nokia 7 comes preinstalled with Nougat, it has since been upgraded to Oreo and is in line to receive Pie, but the wait could be a little longer compared to its counterpart. Still, we expect the few who own the device – both in China and outside the Asian country – to start seeing the update to Android Pie before the close of the year.

Nokia 6 and 6.1 Android Pie update
Expected release date: Q4 2018
Many weren’t happy when HMD announced the Nokia 6.1 with Nougat out of the box, but then the company availed the Oreo update on booting up the device. With Oreo matters behind us, it’s time to ask: when is the Nokia 6.1 going to receive the update to Android Pie?
Well, according to Nokia, there’s a ready Android Pie update for the Nokia 6. However, we also know that the Nokia 6.1 took part in Android Pie beta testing program that was exclusive to the Chinese market, meaning that it also has a ready update to Pie. When exactly the two devices will be upgraded to Pie is still unclear, but based on Nokia’s statement, the OS should start rolling out before this year comes to an end, at least for the 2018 edition.

Nokia 5 and 5.1 Android Pie update
Released: Q1 2019
In mid-December 2017, HMD pushed the first Android Oreo beta to the Nokia 5 and a little over a month later, the stable rollout kicked off. We don’t expect anything different with respect to Android Pie, with the beta update probably set to arrive in Q1 2019, but for the newer Nokia 5.1. As for the original Nokia 5, the update should arrive in early 2019, although the first rollout could come as beta software.

Nokia 3 and 3.1 Android Pie update
Expected release date: Q3 2019
Nokia 3 made the switch from Android Nougat to Oreo in February 2018, but this came as beta software. The trial lasted for several weeks and in April 2018, the stable release started rolling out. So, what next? Well, it’s Android Pie and guess what? HMD has already confirmed that the Pie update will arrive on the Nokia 3, but we still don’t have a date.
The story is the same for the Nokia 3.1, which comes preinstalled with Oreo and with Pie, it will be its first major OS upgrade. Of course, the Nokia 3.1 could get the Pie update ahead of its counterpart, but we still can’t give you any guarantees whatsoever.

Nokia 2 and 2.1 Android Pie update
Expected release date: Q3 2019
The Nokia 2 was the last Nokia phone to be released in 2017 and as you’d expect, it came preinstalled with Nougat out of the box. However, the device’s Oreo update is based on Android Go and has yet to arrive as of August 16, 2018, although the beta testing is ongoing. This should tell us a lot about what to expect as far as Android Pie Go edition update is concerned.
Unless drastic changes happen, we could see the Nokia 2 join the Pie party somewhere in Q3 2019, but the rollout could happen a little earlier on the Nokia 2.1 thanks to the device’s Project Treble support out of the box.
Nokia 1 Android Pie update
Expected release date: Q3 2019
The Nokia 1 is the first Android Go device by HMD Global. The Nokia 1 has Oreo 8.1 out of the box and thus the only other major OS upgrade expected on the phone is Android Pie Go edition, although it could take ages before it finally arrives.
