Nexus 10 Android 5.1 update based custom ROM now available!

The official Android 5.1 update is already available for Nexus 10 users, but being a developer oriented device that’s rightly famous between the techie types, you cannot blame its users for wanting more, something that is satisfied by one and only, a custom ROM.

Today, Chroma custom ROM became available for the Samsung Nexus 10, and for the incredible set of features, Nexus 10 users would be forgiven to install it over their official Android 5.1 update. Chroma is based on AOSP Android 5.1 code, and thus doesn’t look or feel any different from official update, but it does packs in customization options that makes it a good choice of ROM for your device.

What about official update release?

Official Android 5.1 update for Nexus 10 is already available. Download the update from here, and just double click the flash-all.bat file on windows PC after connecting the tablet in working fastboot mode to PC. Google for it if you need more help. after Look here.

Benefits and drawbacks of the unofficial update

Because UI remains exactly same, it’s the extra features and customization option set that makes Chroma custom ROM a decent deal over official 5.1 OTA update. More features are added every now and then, so you really live on the edge with such coolest set of features.

While, you have to do the tedious job of unlocking the bootloader to be able to install custom recovery like TWRP (CWM works, too), which is a must if you are to flash a custom ROM. Once you’ve got recovery, you are able to flash other custom ROMs and mods too, a must for a tech lover.

Removing the unofficial update?

Simply install the official update back as stated above in official update release section, in the way stated there.

Note: You know, because this ROM is not an official Google Android 5.1 update for Nexus 10, there are chances it could contain few kinks at some corners. Any major bugs will be reported below.

  • None

Download the ROM file in .zip format from here, the source page where you could also keep a tab on all of the development about the ROM, and also any current issues with the ROM along with their available fixes, if any. Also download the Android 5.1 Gapps of your choice, and flash them after the ROM — they contain Google services and apps which cannot be part of the ROM.

Important Note: Backup important files stored on your device before proceeding with the steps below, so that in case something goes wrong you’ll have backup of all your important files.

  1. Transfer the ROM file to your device’s internal storage and remember the location where you save it.
  2. Unlock bootloader of your device if you haven’t already. Get help from here.
  3. You need TWRP recovery for this. Get it from here. There’s good instructions set there, too. For more help, Google is your friend.
  4. Boot into Recovery mode. (How to: Power off your S3 and then after 5-6 seconds, press and hold together Power+Home+Volume Up till you see Samsung logo.)
  5. Make a backup. Once in TWRP recovery, take a backup of your current ROM. Select Backup, then do a “Swipe to Back Up” on the bottom of the screen. Wait for the backup to finish, it’s a time consuming process.
  6. Wipe your device. Once the backup is finished, do this: tap on Wipe, then Advanced wipe, and then select Cache, Dalvik/ART cache and Data. Then do the “Swipe to wipe” at bottom to ready the device for ROM flashing by erasing the cache, dalvik cache and data in one shot.
  7. Install ROM now. Go back to the main menu of TWRP recovery and select Install. Navigate to the file where you saved your ROM’s zip file, select it and “Swipe to Confirm Flash” on the bottom of the screen. Now wait until the flashing process finishes.
  8. Also flash the Gapps the same way as ROM.
  9. Go to back to recovery’s Main menu, select Reboot » select System.
  10. Need root access? By default, the ROM is unrooted, so if you want root access, download the superSU file from here, and flash in recovery like ROM.

Your device will now reboot with Android 5.1 update, thanks to CM12.1 custom ROM.

In case you need any help over this, let us know. And, you can thank the user Lrs121 for sharing this.
