The HTC 10 is a year old and has been slightly sidelined due to the arrival of the HTC U11, but the Taiwanese phone maker hasn’t forgotten about it. Twitter member LlabTooFeR is known for his leaks regarding HTC devices. He is responsible for leaking the HTC 10, codenamed “Perfume,” before its market arrival, so it’s no surprise to see him back with more insider info on the device, as the unlocked HTC 10 is getting its May security patch.
The new HTC 10 OTA (over-the-air) update for the unlocked US handset comes in at a weighty 252.47MB and brings the software version number up to 2.48.617.11. Unlocked models received the March 2017 security patch back in early April.
Android devices once received system updates, but Google’s commitment to protecting Android handsets from malicious hackers and software exploits has led the Android OEM to update all Android devices with security patches each month. The unlocked HTC 10, along with other unlocked Android handsets, tend to get security patches faster than carrier-locked handsets, as manufacturers are better able to release updates to unlocked devices directly without carrier interference.
The May 2017 security patch is making its way to unlocked HTC 10 models, so don’t be surprised if it takes a few days to hit your handset. Carrier models should start to receive the May 2017 security patch some weeks from now.
