The race for the thinnest smartphone or tablet may soon turn to a race for the lightest. NEC has unveiled the Medias Tab UL N08-D Android tablet, which is the lightest tablet in the world at a weight of only 249 grams!

The tablet is quite thin as well at 7.9mm and comes with a carbon fiber chassis. It’s not lacking in specs either, as it sports a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 processor, a 7″ 1280×800 pixels display, 8MP camera at the back and a 2MP front camera, microSD card slot (no internal storage spec mentioned), a 3,100 mAh battery, and Android 4.0 “Ice Cream Sandwich” powering the OS.

The Medias Tab UL N08-D doesn’t have a price or release date yet, though Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo will apparently start selling it from September 20th. It’s also not certain if this device will have an international launch, but we’ll keep our fingers crossed for that.
