Getting the CWM recovery to boot on the Motorola Droid RAZR didn’t took much of developers time, but what appeared to be tough was to get the CWM recovery to be fully functional on the RAZR. And finally, developer J.Y.Daddy from Korea has achieved it. In a recent post at xda forums he’s shared his mod for installing ClockWorkMod recovery on the Motorola RAZR.

The developer has said that his build of CWM should be working fine on all the Motorola RAZR phones (both GSM and CDMA) worldwide. Sure you can get all excited for some cool custom roms to be cooking for the Razr.

How to install ClockWorkMod [CWM] Recovery on your Motorola Droid RAZR.

Had your dream of an ICS rom booting up on your Razr? Cool. But, that’s gonna take a while. For now, lets get the CWM booting on your Razr.

But wait! there’s a little (very little) annoying thing about this build of CWM:
Installing this build of CWM will cause your RAZR to always boot into CWM recovery first, and from there you will be able to select the ‘reboot system now’ option to boot into (switch on) your phone. So, proceed only if that’s okay with you.

Downloads

Download the two files given below, and transfer them to your phones SD Card:

  1. RAZR-CWMOnBoot-Global-J.Y.Daddy.zip → download link.
  2. RazrBootstrap.apk → download link.

Installation

Now follow the below given steps, carefully:

  1. Root your Motorola Droid Razr (it’s easy and absolutely required).
  2. Install the RazrBootstrap.apk file that you transferred to your SD Card (as instructed above) using a file manager or an apk installer of your choice.
  3. Open the RazrBootstrap app and hit the Bootstrap Recovery button to begin recovery installation. Once the installation finishes, press recovery and boot into clockworkmod (CWM) recovery mode.
    Navigating in CWM ClockWorkMod recovery:
Use Razr’s soft keys. To scroll up and Down in CWM recovery mode, use Menu and Home keys respectively. Use Back key to go back (to last screen) and Search key to select an option/menu.
  4. Now in the recovery menu select ‘install zip from sdcard’ » then, ‘choose zip from sdcard’ » then, select ‘RAZR-CWMOnBoot-Global-J.Y.Daddy.zip’ and choose Yes to confirm.
  5. Once the process completes, go back and reboot your phone.
  6. Very important!
After rebooting your Razr, open Superuser app » tap on RazrBootstrap app, and then tap on the left most icon in the grey bar at the bottom of the screen (a splitted Android face) to toggle the status of the RazrBootstrap to ‘Denied‘. Yes, it’s very important that you set the RazrBootstrap app’s status to ‘Denied‘ in the Superuser app.
  7. Now reboot your phone again once you’ve done the above step (6th).

That’s all for the installation, but here are a few things you should know:

  • The phone will always boot into CWM recovery as long as you’re using this build of CWM. To boot into phone just select the ‘reboot system now‘ option from the recovery.
  • Take a CWM backup of your current ROM (You must do it.. just in case, you know)
  • Always set the RazrBootstrap app’s status to ‘Denied’ in the Superuser app.
