In addition to Android OS upgrades, Xiaomi usually rolls out regular updates to its MIUI skin that sits on top of AOSP. These updates not necessarily include changes to the OS version, but they do include plenty of changes and new features that breathe new life into older Xiaomi phones.

This is what you get with an update to MIUI 10.1.1 on your Redmi 4 Prime, a device that has now entered its third year on the market. Having launched with MIUI 8 on top of Android Marshmallow, many expected the device to at least make the switch to Nougat, but still, the rolling-out update is based on Marshmallow.

On the brighter side, MIUI 10 brings along Android 9 Pie-inspired gesture navigation that makes use of swipe gestures instead of the regular Home, Back, and Recents buttons. This update also adds nature-inspired sounds for ringtones, notifications, and other system sounds, optimizes system apps, and improves the general system security, just to name but a few.

The OTA update is already rolling out, but this one usually takes days before all units receive the download notification. Rather than wait, you can as well grab the MIUI 10.1.1 recovery and fastboot files below and do a manual installation.
