Recently launched Micromax Canvas Xpress 4G is now root friendly, and it’s also got a custom recovery in the form of CWM recovery. CWM is not the most popular of recovery now a days, but it does the job all fine. It’s a good alternative until Xpress 4G TWRP recovery is out.
To root Xpress 4G, you need to install CWM recovery first. That is done using the SP Flash Tool. After that, use you have to use CWM recovery to install SuperSU root package that roots your Xpress 4G easily.
Start with installing the drivers first. We need to install both ADB drivers and USB drivers. Get the ADB drivers from here. Then, download this file in .RAR format for USB drivers and extract it using 7-zip. Then run the install.bat file to begin drivers installation. If you get any error, then look at the READ_ME file for help.
After installing drivers, enable USB debugging. For that, go to Settings, About device, and then tap on build no. for about 7-8 times to unlock developer options. Now, go back to Settings, and tap on Developer options at the near bottom.
Locate the USB debugging option, and use it toggle button to enable it. Tap on OK button on the pop-up. Also enable the Allow OEM Unlocking option by using its toggle button.
Install CWM recovery. This is required before we could root Xpress 4G.
For that, download the Xpress 4G CWM recovery file from here on your PC. Also download the SP Flash tool from here, and the scatter file for Xpress 4G from here.
Extract the SP Flashtool file into a new folder and then to run it, double click on flash_tool file. Click on scatter button and select the scatter file for Xpress 4G you downloaded above. You will get various options. Make sure you keep only Recovery option as checked, and rest all unchecked. Okay.
Now, we got to provide the recovery image file to the Flash Tool. Click on blank line under the location column in recovery’s row, which will open a window for you to select a file. Just select the CWM recovery file now.
Next, take your device, power it off, and then pull out its battery. Insert the battery back, but don’t start the device.
Click on Download button on SP Flash Tool, it will show a warning that not all images are selected, just click on Okay.
Now, connect your device (in powered off state) to PC using USB cable. If you have the right drivers installed, then SP Flash Tool will show green tick. That’s it, CWM recovery is now installed on your Xpress 4G.
Root Xpress 4G. Having installed CWM, we will now use CWM to get root access on Canvas Xpress 4G. It’s easy, and will take just 5-10 mins.
Download the SuperSU package from here, and then transfer this to your Xpress 4G.
Then boot your Xpress 4G into recovery mode. For this, power off your device first. Now, press and hold Volume down + Power button together until you see anything on screen. Now, here, Volume up selects the option, while you have to use Volume down button to move between options. Use Volume down to reach recovery option, and then press Volume up to select it. That’s it.
Once in recovery mode, you will see CWM recovery written at top. Use Install zip option from there (power button selects the option while volume buttons are used for moving between option in CWM recovery). Select the SuperSU file you transferred earlier and confirm it on next screen.
When done, restart your Xpress 4G by using ‘reboot system now’ option.
That’s it. Your Micromax Canvas Xpress 4G is now rooted.
