LG X2 2018: A budget phone with a bunch of oldies

In addition to giving the premium market a new member in LG G7 ThinQ, the Korean company has also unveiled a bunch of budget phones under the LG Q7 series and is reportedly lining up two more in the shape of LG X5 and LG X2. The Q7 and X5 are already captured here and here, respectively, but in this post, we have all you need to know about the latter device.

Unveiled in Korea, the LG X2 is the ultra-low-end model in the refreshed X series that aims to bring about a good handset at an affordable price.

LG X2 specs

  • 5-inch HD display
  • Snapdragon 425 processor
  • 2GB RAM and 32GB ROM
  • 13MP back and 5MP front cameras
  • 2410mAh battery
  • 144.8 x 71.9 x 8.1 mm

Unlike the company’s other budget phones in the Q series, you’ll reportedly be getting a bunch of oldies on the LG X2, among them a display screen with a 16:9 aspect ratio, removable battery, microUSB port, and a 2-year old Snapdragon 425 processor. Being an entry-level device, you also get a modest 720p resolution, which is still great considering the screen size of just 5 inches.

Despite its age, the Snapdragon 425 chipset isn’t such a terrible choice, but given the market already has Snapdragon 430, 435 and 450, there’s no doubt LG had room to do better but chose not to for whatever reason. We expect to see Android Oreo running the show out of the box, although there’s no mention of the same. The LG X2 also supports the FM radio function.

LG X2 price and availability

LG X2 has supposedly been confirmed for the Korean market, where availability is expected to begin in June 2018, but we don’t have an exact date as to when this will be happening. Also, we are yet to establish whether the X2 will be limited to the Korean market or will be sold globally. While the latter is more likely, we won’t be surprised if the phone steps out of the Korean market with a different name.

In terms of pricing, reports surfacing from Korea claim that the LG X2 will be valued at about 200,000 won, which translates to about $185. When compared to other similar-priced devices like the Redmi Note 5, Honor 9 Lite or Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1, there’s no doubt that LG will be facing an uphill task convincing new customers to skip other offers in favor of the X2.
