The Consumer Electronics Show, or CES is one of the most highly covered, as well as attended events in the consumer electronics space. It also acts as a major platform for large as well as smaller manufacturers to showcase their technology and products to the world.
LG, one of the global big-guns in the Consumer Electronics space is getting all set to unveil a full range of high-resolution displays at CES, which opens its doors on January 8th. LG has apparently promised to showcase displays ranging from 4.7″for mobile phone screens to giant 84″ TV screens with unbelievable resolutions.
Of course, we are more interested in what this could mean for the Android or rather the mobile device world specifically. Let’s start with the pocket-sized displays first. To start with, there is a 4.7″ display unit, with a bezel that’s only about 1 mm wide, ensuring that phones using it will look more compact than the current ones. The effect will be similar to the Motorola Razr M, which has what can be called a true edge-to-edge display, or even the newly released Oppo Find 5.
And then it gets more and more interesting. The next in line packs a 5.5″ FullHD screen (New Phablet from LG next year?) which is loaded with an eye-popping 403 PPI pixel density! Even the Google Nexus 10, which is by far the sharpest thing around currently might pale in comparison against the number of pixels LG is pumping in per inch with this guy. And on a Full HD 5.5-inch phone screen, this is going to be just mind-blowing. Browsing the web, or playing Shadowgun is going to be sheer bliss with this kinda screen!
Moving on from there, the next screen size comes in at 7-inches. 7-inch tablets have been around for a while, and were back in vogue since the original Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000 came out a few years ago. But the release of the Nexus 7 and the Kindle Fire HD, have virtually revitalized the 7-inch tablet space, and have made it more fashionable and so much cooler. LG will also be showing off a 7-inch FullHD display at 1920 x 1200 resolution packing a pixel density of 324 PPI, which again will be the highest in the tablet space. Imagine a Nexus 7 with a FullHD high PPI display, now that would have been something, right?
Of course, LG will also be showcasing displays for Ultrabooks, laptops and TV monitors as well. But coming back to the mobile devices bit, we already know Apple is talks with LG for iPhone and iPad displays post the legal friction between Apple and Samsung. Well, this could well be the platform for LG to really hit the spot and show off their technical prowess in display technology, which we all know ranks right up there with the best.
That said, LG sure seems to have been ill-equipped to deal with the high demand posed by its Nexus 4 smartphone, so much so, that the device has spent more time in an Out of Stock status on the Google Play Store than Available. While there is no doubt in anybody’s mind that LG can dish out high-quality products, the question is whether they will be able to cope with high volume demand and deliver? Seeing the kind of stuff they have cooking, I sure hope so and would love to see one of these super high-res displays adorning one of my devices in the near future.
