No, seriously, no kidding, the title speaks the truth, LG really has begun rolling out the Ice Cream Sandwich Android 4.0 update to the LG Optimus 2X, which should be pleasing a lot of angry customers of the Optimus 2X that have been waiting for the update. At least, the ones who are still hanging on to the device.
Now two major Android versions old, Ice Cream Sandwich brings about a redesign of the Android interface, along with other improvements and features such as swipe-able notifications, hardware acceleration for apps for improved performance, resizable widgets, and homescreen folders, mobile data usage management, a faster browser, better email experience, face unlock, and overall faster performance of the OS.
The Korean Optimus 2X has been enjoying these benefits for some time now, and finally owners of the international variant will be able to do so as well. However, the update is currently not available for carrier variants such as T-Mobile’s G2x, and will no doubt come much later as carriers get down to approving the update.
Also, the much-awaited update will not be available over the air and users will have to use LG’s PC Suite companion software (which you can download here) to grab the tasty goodness of Ice Cream Sandwich. That’s a small price to pay, however, for finally seeing the Optimus 2x leaving Gingerbread behind and entering the era of Android that looks and behaves much more like a mature OS.
So go ahead and fire up LG’s PC suite software and check if the update is already available in your country. If it isn’t, don’t be disappointed as these updates always gradually make their way to more and more countries. As for Android 4.1 or any update above 4.0, better not be hopeful as this is no doubt the final major update for the Optimus 2X.
