Update [April 12, 2017]: The LG G3 is now receiving the latest security patch from Verizon. The  OTA update goes as software version VS9854CA, and also irons out bugs and other issues. In addition to applying the latest security patch the update also optimizes device performance and stability.

Update [October 05, 2016]: Sprint has also released its September patch for the G3. The new software version is now LS990ZVF, and is still based on Android 6.0.1.

Update: T-Mobile LG G3 is receiving a new update recently, based on 6.0.1 obviously, and is dubbed as software version D85130e. The update doesn’t bring anything new or exciting but does packs in Google’s security enhancements and promises to make system more stable that it currently is, of which we have no idea, really!

If you were hoping for a feature-rich update, or Android Nougat for LG G3, of which chances are very, very slim, then you will be disappointed. But given that G3 is almost two and a half years old now, that LG is still taking care of users’ security, is a good thing that must be appreciated.

Unofficial Android 7.0 Nougat update: The awesome development community at Android has churned out yet another delightful build, the AOSP based Android 7.0 running custom ROM for LG G3. Looking at what’s working and what not lists, it’s easy to figure out that this ROM isn’t meant for daily use, but if wanted to see Nougat update in action on your G3, it’s your best choice right now.

We’d recommend you keep a LG G3 Marshmallow firmware ready with you so that you can go back to Android 6.0.1 when your play time with Nougat comes to end. You can find the unofficial LG G3 Nougat update at its development page here. To install it, you will need TWRP recovery, and then follow the guide available here. BTW, ROM is compatible only with model no. D850 (and D855 too, but you need kernel and script from here), so be sure to check your device’s model no. in Settings > About device.

While it’s great that LG G3 has the much-coveted Nougat update available for it, let’s talk about the whole scenario of G3’s official Android 7.0 update chances a bit.

International G3 Nougat update

Expected release date: Official – Never; Unofficial – Yes.

OEMs usually follow a two-year updates-are-sure policy. Now that G3 has crossed that age, the official Android 7.0 update for G3 won’t come at all. yes, that’s hard truth G3 users will have to live up to this year.

Though, the unofficial gateway is fully open, and will be gracing G3 totally. We’ve already had a 7.0 running ROM available, and many more should be arriving shortly. We’re talking about custom ROMs like CM14, Paranoid Android, Chroma, etc.

The ROM link shared above is a good example how active you can assume the developer enthusiasm to bring Nougat update to G3, as it’s been barely seven days since Google uploaded the 7.0 update code to AOSP, and a ROM is available today. Go give it a try, but don’t forget the things we’ve told you above to keep in mind.

LG G3 at AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, US Cellular and in Canada

Expected release date: Official – Never; Unofficial – Yes.

Well, same is the case for all variants of LG G3 in US, and Canada — and all over the world. G3 is pretty old device now, and it becomes tedious for OEMs to continue supporting full range of devices to major Android OS updates, especially when users themselves change the device after two years or so.

Once again, the G3 Nougat update for devices at AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon and US Cellular should come via unofficial channels, and that first and foremost includes AOSP ROMs, and CM14.

In fact, an Android 7.0 Nougat AOSP ROM already available for the T-Mobile G3, here. It won’t work with other carriers. As said in the opening paragraphs above, you will need TWRP recovery to install it, and must keep Marshmallow firmwares ready with you so that going back to Android 6.0.1 is easy. Not many things work with this ROM, so it’s good only if you wanna spend an hour or two with Android Nougat update — which is nice! — and then go back to Android 6.0.1.
