Google and a handful of other companies are already trialing the next version of Android P and is expected to make it public somewhere in August, with a few other OEMs joining the party in Q4. It is during this same period that users of the Lenovo Tab4 series will also be receiving updates not to Android P, but to Android 8.1 Oreo, which will be almost a year old by then.
Three Lenovo Tab4 tablets – Lenovo Tab4 8, Lenovo Tab4 8 Plus and Lenovo Tab4 10 – have been confirmed by the company to end the year with Oreo 8.1, the first OS upgrade since their launch with Android 7.1 Nougat. Why the Tab4 10 Plus isn’t on the list isn’t known to us, but we expect it will get Oreo 8.1 too.
Google first rolled out Android 8.1 Oreo to the Pixels in mid-December 2017 and in fact, it may roll out an incremental upgrade to the incoming Android P at around the same time this year. However, given that Lenovo Tab4 users will still be looking out for an OS that rolled out a year ago, there’s no chance of getting Android P on these slates. But no, we don’t make the rules.
On the brighter side, you’ll at least be getting Android 8.1 and not 8.0.
